Realme fastest growing smartphone brand while Xiaomi leads in India: Counterpoint

Smartphone shipments in India have grown 11 percent year-on-year in 2021. The country saw shipments of 169 million units in the last year, according to a market research report by Counterpoint Research. However, sales contracted for all major brands in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Counterpoint also added that the Indian smartphone market revenue crossed $38 billion in 2021 with a YoY growth of 27 percent. This is said to be the best ever result in the country despite various issues ranging from the second COVID-19 wave, component shortage to supply chain disruption.

As per Counterpoint, Xiaomi led India’s smartphone market last year with a 24 percent market share. It grew 258 percent in the premium smartphone segment comprising of phones priced above Rs 30,000. Samsung bagged the second spot with an 18 percent market share. It emerged as the top brand in selling 5G phones in Q4, 2021. Additionally, the South Korean brand’s foldable shipments (Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip) grew 388 percent year-on-year. 

Vivo took the third spot with a 15 percent share in India’s smartphone market. Realme and OPPO came fourth and fifth with 14 and 10 percent market share respectively. The report also shows that Vivo led the 5G segment last year with a 19 percent market share. On the other hand, Realme became the fastest growing brand in the country with a 20 percent YoY growth. 

Apart from Realme, Apple was also one of the fastest-growing brands in the country in 2021 with 108 percent YoY growth in shipments. The Cupertino-based giant led the premium segment in India with a massive 44 percent market share. 

OPPO’s subsidiary OnePlus clocked 5 million shipments with a 59 percent year-on-year growth. It led the affordable premium segment comprising of phones between Rs 30,000 – Rs 45,000 bracket.
