Mosseri stated in the video post on Twitter that the upcoming feed change will allow users to choose between three different feed options, including Home, Following, and Favourites. While the first option still sticks to the algorithmic sorting, the latter two bring back chronological feed. Here is a quick walkthrough of the forthcoming feed options and how to use them once they are released.

What is the Instagram chronological feed?

Instagram chronological feed

Instagram switched to an algorithm-based feed in 2016, replacing the chronological order that showed content in the order in which they were posted. Since then, the new algorithm feed order has received heavy criticism from Instagram users. Recently, the company claimed that Instagram users were missing over 70 percent of the content in their feeds, including the post from the account they usually follow. The auto-generated feed faced severe scrutiny over how it affects children, teenagers, and younger audiences who were seeing posts not intended for them. In short, the algorithm limited users from keeping up with their favourite accounts. Now, the company is preparing to bring the chronological feed order back to the platform again with slight alterations and extended features.

Home, Favourites, and Following: what are the new Instagram feed settings?

According to CEO Adam Mosseri, Instagram will support three different ways to present the feed’s content to the users.  As for the first feed order, ‘Home’ will allow users to see relevant content from what the algorithm thinks will interest them the most. The second “Favourites” feed order will deliver content from a dedicated set of accounts selected by the user in chronological order. As for the last, the “Following” feed order will bring back the chronological system where posts will be shown from the accounts followed by the user.

Though the official release date of the new feed orders is yet to be determined, CEO Mosseri has assured that some of the features would come out in the next few weeks while the complete feed experience will be released in the first half of this year. As of now, several users have already received the new feed settings as part of testing by the platform.

How to select Instagram chronological feed?

The new feed orders will soon be available on the app’s homepage. Using the new order, users can customise how they want to see posts on their Instagram feeds. The Home feed is what users are familiar with right now, while Favourites and Following will change how content is shown on individual feeds. Here is a quick look at how to choose a chronological feed on Instagram.
