Twitter finally brings back link previews for Instagram posts

Highlights

  • Twitter users can now view a preview of an Instagram post shared on its platform
  • The link preview feature is now making a comeback after nine long years
  • Earlier, Twitter users would have to click on the link to view the Instagram post

Instagram links shared on Twitter will now once again display a small preview of the post. It will give a small glimpse of the post to the users on the microblogging platform instead of requiring them to click on the link. The feature is similar to how shared articles and other media are previewed on Twitter.

Both social media giants announced the update in tweets and it is currently rolling out on Android, iOS, and the web. The post preview feature is not exactly new and was taken down way back in 2012.

Twitter supports Instagram link previews once again

Before the popular photo-sharing app was acquired by Meta (formerly Facebook), Twitter users were able to see the preview of the Instagram post shared via a link. This also made cross-sharing across the two social media platforms easier, unfortunately, it became difficult when the support was removed. For the last nine years, (since 2012) Instagram links posted on Twitter would only display the URL in the tweet. This meant that users would have to click on the link and follow it to know what the post was about.

Link previews on Twitter let users decide if they want to see the full post.

Instagram link previews: how to use

Instagram link previews will automatically be made into a card format. There will be a link to the Instagram post in the Tweet along with the user’s caption. The preview will also include a thumbnail of the post on the left side and the official Instagram handle of the shared post. Follow the steps below to use Instagram link previews on Twitter.

  1. Create a new Tweet on Twitter
  2. Add your caption
  3. Copy and paste the link of your preferred Instagram post in the caption

It’s worth noting that the Instagram link preview on Twitter only works for image posts. Other Instagram content like IGTV videos and Reels aren’t supported.
