Instagram Will Now Tell You If your Posts Have Been Shadowbanned

Instagram now lets creators and businesses know if their posts are ineligible to be recommended to other users or, in short shadowbanned. Shadowbanning is the term given by social media users when the platform suppresses content without officially notifying the users about an official ban or removal of the post. This new feature from Instagram brings more transparency to this practice.

To be eligible to be recommended on Instagram Feed, Explore, and Reels, a post must follow the guidelines from Instagram. Instagram users can post content on violence or drug use, but they may be blocked from recommending it to other users. Previously, it was unknown to the creator or business if the post had been removed from recommended.

This new feature will let the users know if a post is not being recommended to the users not following you. Previously, the creators wouldn’t know if any posts had lowered visibility among audiences or not.

Meta’s Instagram head Adam Mosseri informed of this change on Instagram via a Reels video. He said, “We’re expanding Account Status so professional accounts can understand if their content may be eligible to be recommended to non-followers and what they can do about it.”

Instagram also made a blog post detailing this new feature. It read, “We know that, for many creators, having Instagram recommend your content is a great way to reach new fans and grow your audience. That’s why it’s important that creators understand our guidelines and can know if something they’ve posted or have in their profile may be impacting their reach to non-followers. It’s also why we’re introducing the ability to disagree with our decision, so our review team can take another look as quickly as possible, and we can continue to improve our detection technology.”

How to check if your posts were shadowbanned on Instagram

  1. On Instagram, under the Profile, select the menu option.
  2. Click on Settings.
  3. Select Account.
  4. You’ll find the Account Status here; click it.
  5. You’ll find out if your posts are violating any guidelines. It will also show the posts which are removed.

What to do if your account status shows issues

Instagram has also recommended what to do in case of a shadow ban. The official recommendation if your posts go against community guidelines is to Edit or Remove the post.

But before going for the Delete option, you can go for an appeal by selecting Disagree with the decision. The review team will recheck the content and will let you know the decision soon.

Instagram also recommends you abide by Recommended Guidelines and Community Guidelines before making any new posts.
