Apple recently launched its latest iPhones called the iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The latest generation of iPhones come with a new design, 5G connectivity, upgraded cameras and the latest A14 Bionic SoC. The Cupertino-based tech giant has announced the Indian pricing of the iPhone 12 series and not surprisingly, it’s on the higher side.
In India, the iPhone 12 series starts at Rs 69,900 for the base iPhone 12 Mini model and goes up to Rs 1,59,900 for the top-end iPhone 12 Pro Max 512GB variant. The prices are higher than last year’s iPhone 11 series in India and among the highest in the world. Let’s take a look at why iPhones are on the expensive side in the country.
Why are iPhones so expensive in India?
In India, smartphone makers are required to pay Basic Custom Duty as well as GST on imported units, which add to the retail price of smartphones. Earlier this year, the government of India hiked the GST rate from 12 percent to 18 percent and the Basic Custom Duty rate was also increased in the Budget 2020. This explains the inflated rate of iPhone 12 series as compared to last year’s iPhone 11 line-up.
The iPhone 12 series is currently not assembled in India, although there is a report that Apple could begin making its latest phones here by next year. This is another reason for the higher price tag, since local assembly allows Apple to save 22 percent on import duties, thus providing a scope to lower the price. Apple currently assembles the iPhone SE (2020), iPhone XR and iPhone 11 locally, and all these phones have been selling at discounted rates in the country.
