- iPhone 14 series is being assembled in China
- COVID lockdowns have affected the production process
- iPhone 14 Max production reportedly delayed by three weeks
iPhone 14 launch could be affected as the company is struggling with its production due to COVID lockdowns in China, claims a recent report by Nikkei Asia. Apple is known for launching new iPhones in the month of September each year. This year too, the company is expected to announce the iPhone 14 series in September.
The iPhone 14 lineup reportedly includes four models: the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Max, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The report claims that one of the models is around three weeks behind the usual schedule of production because of the lockdowns in Shanghai, China. According to analyst Jeff Pu, the affected model could be the iPhone 14 Max.
iPhone 14 series development affected by COVID lockdowns in China
In March 2022, China encountered its biggest surge in COVID cases in two years. As part of China’s zero-COVID policy, strict lockdowns were imposed in Shanghai and in the neighbouring cities. Finally, Shanghai reached “zero COVID” status on May 17th, 2022. By April end, Apple warned that it faces up to $8 billion in losses this quarter due to COVID lockdowns and production constraints in China.
At present, the iPhone 14 series has reached the engineering verification test (EVT) stage of development. It is expected to move to the verification stage by June end. According to the publication, this provides sufficient time to begin the mass production of the iPhone 14 lineup by the end of August or in the first week of September. However, one of the models, which is said to be the iPhone 14 Max, is around three weeks behind the usual schedule due to lockdowns in Shanghai.
Apple is reportedly trying to make up for the lost ground by instructing its suppliers to speed up the production process. While restrictions have been eased in Shanghai, the entire supply chain hasn’t started operating normally in the country. Analysts are of the view that it may take around a month or so for the supply chain to recover.
