While Android smartphone OEMs are already launching 5G smartphones, Apple is rumored to launch its first 5G iPhones only in the year 2020. TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who is known for his track record on revealing information on upcoming iPhones has shared some vital details of the three iPhones arriving next year. All of them are expected to sport OLED display panels. The entry-level model among them will support only LTE connectivity, whereas the other two smartphones are expected to arrive with 5G connectivity support.
The two premium iPhones arriving next year are expected to feature 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch OLED panels. The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max from last year are equipped with 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch OLED displays respectively. iPhone fans have been eagerly waiting for a compact-sized smartphone. This could be the reason why Apple will be releasing a 5.4-inch OLED iPhone with a compact form factor next year. The larger iPhone for 2020 will be feature a slightly bigger display than the iPhone XS Max.
The iPhone XR features a 6.1-inch LCD display. The 6.1-inch model coming in 2020 will also be a more affordable device, that will be upgraded to an OLED panel. The handset will lack support for 5G connectivity. The 5G-enabled iPhones for 2020 will be equipped with modems supplied by Qualcomm. These handsets will come with support for sub-6GHz and mmWave technology. There is no word on whether the 2020 iPhones will come with in-display fingerprint scanners or will be equipped with Face ID 3D face recognition as seen on the current iPhones.
Kuo is of the view that the 5G iPhones will start supporting 5G networks in 2021. The Cupertino tech giant is expected to ready its own 5G modem in 2022 or 2023. This will allow the firm to rely less on Qualcomm’s 5G modem.
