Apple is gearing up to launch the much-hyped successor to the iPhone SE that debuted back in 2016. Citing information acquired from atrusted source, 9to5Mac has posted an exclusive report claiming to have reliable information about the launch of the new smartphone. It claims that Apple plans to call the new device iPhone SE 2020 model. Although Apple is yet to formally reveal the moniker for the upcoming iPhone, the handset has been rumoured to be called the iPhone SE 2 or the iPhone 9. If the reports are to be believed, the company could open pre-booking as early as April 3rd, hinting at an imminent launch. Apple was originally slated to launch the new device on March 31st, but had to reschedule in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
iPhone SE 2020 specifications and features
The original iPhone SE was constructed using the iPhone 5s chassis with the processor and camera borrowed from the 6s. The 2020 variant is expected to use Apple’s Bionic A13 processor found in the iPhone 11 series, with an iPhone 8-like design. The iPhone SE 2020 will be a major upgrade for iPhone 6 users who no longer have access to the latest iOS updates. The A13 SoC enables augmented reality and Apple Arcade, which are unavailable on the iPhone 6.
The publication further revealed that iPhone SE 2020 will arrive in three colour variants, namely white, black, and PRODUCT (Red). The handset will be available in three storage options, including 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Apple is also working on a range of covers for the SE, including black and white silicone covers, and red, black, and midnight blue leather covers. Accessories like screen protectors designed for the new iPhone SE are already listed on Apple’s official website, This is more proof that iPhone SE 2020 will go official soon.
Previous reports have claimed that the 2020 iPhone SE will flaunt a 4.7-inch display, similar to the iPhone 8. The device is likely to borrow the single 12-megapixel primary camera setup from the iPhone 11. The smartphone is expected to feature a single selfie sensor at the front. The iPhone SE 2020 is expected to feature a longer battery life compared to the iPhone 8, since it will not feature 3D Touch and other features found on older-gen iPhones.
iPhone SE 2020 price and availability
The publication confirms analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s previous assessment of the iPhone SE variants. Kuo previously reported that Apple would price its upcoming SE range from $399 (~Rs 30,300). For comparison, the iPhone 8 is currently priced at $449 (~Rs 34,000). Apple may open pre-orders as early as April 3rd, even though a launch date is yet to be announced. The report further quotes a separate source, claiming retailers will commence selling cases for the SE 2 starting Sunday. This might hint at Apple’s plans for announcing the device early next week.
