- The Jio 5G smartphone is expected to feature Android Go Edition and entry-level specifications
- The JioBook will be a low-cost laptop with cellular connectivity and Android 10
The Jio 5G smartphone and JioBook laptop will reportedly launch at the Reliance AGM 2021. Notably, the largest telco in the country hosts its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the second half of the year. The event usually witnesses the launch of new products and services from the company.
The latest development comes from an ET Telecom report citing an executive close to the matter. Notably, Jio is speculated to launch an affordable 5G phone in partnership with Google that will cost as little as Rs 2,500. Additionally, Jio was rumoured to be working on a low-cost laptop powered by Snapdragon 665 SoC with Android 10-based JioOS.
Jio 5G phone and JioBook launch date
Reliance usually hosts its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in August-September. The event usually witnesses the launch of several new products and services from the brand. Now, if the ET Telecom report is to be believed, this year’s AGM will see Jio launching the most affordable 5G phone as well as the rumoured low-cost JioBook laptop.
According to the report, Jio and Google are still in talks to decide which Android version the affordable 5G smartphone will feature. The executive revealed that the smartphone might come with the Android Go and feature entry-level specifications, which was a given considering the reported price of Rs 2,500.
Notably, at last year’s 43rd Annual General Meeting, Mukesh Ambani had announced that Google invested Rs 33,737 crore for a 7.1 precent stake in Jio Platforms to work towards building an optimised Android OS for low-cost phones. It’s possible that the smartphone might run an optimised Android co-developed by Google and Reliance Jio.
JioBook specifications and features
Coming to the JioBook, an XDA Developers’ report earlier this month quoted that Reliance Jio had talks with Qualcomm to launch low-cost laptops with cellular connectivity back in 2018. The publication revealed a prototype laptop with ‘JioOS’ and documents of Jio’s partnership with Bluebank Communication Technology of China to develop the product.
The report revealed several key aspects of the upcoming JioBook including HD display, Snapdragon 665 processor with an integrated 4G modem, up to 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and Android 10. The connectivity options will include a mini HDMI connector, 2.4 and 5GHz Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
