Reliance is expected to launch JioPhone 3, the successor to last year’s JioPhone 2. Although the exact launch date is not known, the company will likely announce the device at its upcoming 42nd AGM on August 12th. Now ahead of the launch, a report by MySmartPrice states that the next generation JioPhone could be powered by a MediaTek chipset.
According to the report, Reliance is working on a 4G feature phone with a MediaTek processor, which is expected to be none other than the JioPhone 3. Earlier, Reliance used to sell Android phones under LYF branding with MediaTek chipsets. The first and second-generation JioPhones are powered by either Qualcomm or Unisoc processors. The report also indicated Jio working with chipmaker MediaTek to launch a processor aimed at feature phones.
Speaking to Economic Times, TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek Wireless Communication revealed that “The project [4g feature phone] is going on. We expect devices to be available soon. We are working with the telco, but OEMs for india…we are working with KaiOS as well.” The report adds that MediaTek was working with Reliance Retail to make low-cost Android Go smartphones under the LYF brand but has now shifted its focus to 4G feature phones.
No details regarding the JioPhone 3 have been revealed yet. We will know in the coming days.
In other news, MediaTek recently launched gaming-centric chipsets Helio G90 and G90T which will feature on a Xiaomi smartphone.
