The successor to last year’s Reliance JioPhone dubbed as the JioPhone 2 was launched a few days ago at RIL’s 41st AGM. It also announced the support for popular apps like Whatsapp, Facebook and Youtube starting from August 15. This makes the phone attractive for those who are first time users or can’t spend much on buying a smartphone.
Both the JioPhone and JioPhone 2 run on KaiOS, an operating system that powers feature phones and allows them to have smart features. Recently, search giant Google invested 22mn in KaiOS which allowed it to include services such as Assistant, Maps, and Youtube on the 4G enabled feature phone.
As there is no Google Play Store on the JioPhone, apps arrive via software updates and the most recent one to arrive is Google Maps. Users can check the availability of update by going into Settings > Device > Software update and then installing it. After updating the device to the latest version, users need to visit the Jio app store and download Google Maps from there.
The app has been made with a minimal layout since the phone has a 2.4-inch display. It has various options like Search, Show map, Your location, Drive, Two wheeler, Train, Bus, Walk, Map layers and About section. In search option, users can enter the location they want to navigate to. Although the interface is simple, navigation can be tricky at times given the small screen size of phone.
With the Google Maps update, the phone enables navigational capabilities. The JioPhone 2 will also support Google Maps once it hits the market from August 15. In addition, other popular apps like Whatsapp, Youtube will also be made available for the JioPhones soon.
