Major OTT apps like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar have been the top three players in India’s streaming services market. Now, JustWatch has released new data for Q4 2020, which reveals that Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar are tied for the first place during the last quarter.
The data comes from JustWatch’s measured interest in SVOD services on the JustWatch website in India from October 1st to December 31st. While Prime Video is in the top spot with Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix is in the third spot with ZEE5, JioCinema, and SonyLIV trailing behind it. Let’s take a look at all details of the report.
Disney+ Hotstar, Prime Video, and Netflix together hold 56 percent market share in India
JustWatch says that Disney+ Hotstar kept gaining a 5 percent market share throughout the year 2020, and jumped from the third spot to tie with Prime Video in the first position. Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar are both in the first position with a 19 percent market share each. While Prime Video has a strong regional content library and exclusive movie streaming rights, Disney+ Hotstar offers exclusive rights for live sports streaming and premium content from Marvel and Star Wars franchises.
Netflix slipped to the second position with an 18 percent market share during Q4 2020. The OTT platform has been trying to lure users by hosting first of its kind Netflix StreamFest, where everyone in India could stream everything on the platform free of cost for a limited duration. More recently, the platform started offering the first episode of top shows for free as well.
ZEE5 and JioCinema are in the fourth and fifth spots with a 9 percent and 7 percent market share respectively. SonyLIV is in the sixth position with a 6 percent share, followed by ALT Balaji with a 4 percent market share.
