Homegrown brand Lava has launched the first smartphone under the Android Oreo (Go Edition) program in India. This program promises timely software updates for entry-level smartphones. Android Go has been specially designed to be run on smartphones with low specifications.
To start off, the smartphone brand has partnered with India’s largest telecom provider Airtel to make this phone available at an affordable price for the masses. Airtel has also partnered with Micromax under the same program so you can expect another smartphone from the company to show up sometime soon as well.
Speaking about the phone itself, it is a fairly compact device having a 4.5-inch FWVGA display. Now this display panel isn’t the best if you are looking for viewing content in high definition, but considering the price it will be offered for. The front of the phone is layered with 2.5D curved glass with added Corning Gorilla Glass for added protection.
Underneath its hood, the phone is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6737M processor ticking at 1.1GHz. This is also coupled with an Adreno 304 GPU to handle some graphics intensive processes. Overall, this processor and GPU combination isn’t the most powerful so you may want to keep your expectations realistic if you happen to purchase one. The phone will also come with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. Thankfully the storage can be expanded externally up to 128GB through its microSD card slot. To top it off, the phone features Go Edition of the OS as well as lite version apps which occupy very little space.
On the software side of things is where the phone truly shines. Out of the box, the Lava Z50 will come with Android Oreo. The phone will also receive regular security as well as software updates. This would ensure that the phone is protected from security threats and users receive the best that Google has to offer before other smartphones on the market. In addition to that, the phone will offer search results in 10 major Indian languages (including Hindi), which is a nice addition. To clarify, Android Go does have some differences when compared to the regular version. Android Oreo (Go Edition) is optimised to run on low specifications so some features may be missing with this OS.
Lastly, let’s consider the optics department. This is where the phone lacks for the most part. The Z50 comes with a 5-megapixel camera located on either side. Both camera modules are accompanied with an LED flash so it will be able to capture images even in poor lighting. The phone does make up for the lack of hardware specifications on the camera front with some enhancements through software. The rear-facing camera will be able to capture dual bokeh images.
The phone will be offered in two colour variants – Black and Gold. The handsets will be available across 1,00,000 retailers across the country. Lava is also offering a two-year warranty with this phone which will serve as icing on the cake. Since the phone will be made available in collaboration with Airtel, it will come with preloaded apps such as the MyAirtel App, Airtel TV and Wynk Music. Airtel will also offer cashback worth up to Rs. 2000 if you are looking to get your hands on this device.
