Home-grown brand Lava has taken advantage of Google’s Android Go Project that is targeted for entry-level phones and launched the Z50 smartphone. This smartphone will receive a skimmed version of the latest Android operating system with Google’s suite of apps optimized for its specifications. The phone can be purchased for as low as Rs. 2,400. Let’s have a look at what this smartphone has to offer.
Display and Design
Bering in mind that this is a low-cost smartphone, the build quality reflects its price tag. It has a plastic build and lacks fancy elements like a bezel-less display. It sports a 4.5-inch TFT FWVGA capacitive touchscreen which is fairly decent. A drawback to this is that it can support multi-touch for only two fingers at a time, which means you can pinch to zoom, but any gesture that requires three fingers won’t work.
Performance and Storage
Underneath its hood, the Lava Z50 is powered by the quad-core MediaTek MTK6737m processor. This is a low power processor and it can handle day to day tasks, but it is not suitable for gaming or heavy use. With this processor, the company has also provided 1GB of RAM. This isn’t a lot of RAM, but, considering that it will run a very clean and optimized version of Android, it should be sufficient. On the storage front, this offering comes with 8GB of internal memory which can be expanded up to 64GB with the help of a microSD card.
Camera and Software
In the optics department, the phone is no stunner. It has two sets of cameras located on either side of the phone. Both camera modules feature a 5MP sensor. A good addition to these cameras is that the phone is equipped with LED flash both on the front as well as the back. This helps get decent photos when the ambient lighting is poor, but you’d want to keep your expectations low considering they’re only 5MP sensors. The software is where the phone truly shines through. This offering from Lava comes with Android Oreo (Go Edition). The search giant has launched this OS especially for phones like this one. It comes with a lot of optimizations that allow the device to run smoothly despite its mediocre specifications. Unlike other Android phones on the market, this phone comes with a host of Google Go apps. These apps include Maps Go, Gmail Go, YouTube, Assistant, Google Go, among others.
Connectivity and Battery
The Lava Z50, despite being a low-budget smartphone, doesn’t cut corners on the connectivity front. It supports two SIM cards, with support for 4G and VoLTE. It features Bluetooth and WiFi as well. It has a micro USB port located on the bottom for interfacing the phone to a computer and charging it.
As far as the pricing of the phone goes, the Lava Z50 is retailing for Rs. 4,400. However, you can also purchase the phone for as low as Rs. 2,400 under Airtel’s ongoing Mera Pehla Smartphone program. The phone is available in two colour variants viz. Black and Gold.
