MWC 2019: Lenovo announces new ThinkPad and IdeaPad laptops

Alongside the Tab V7 tablet, Lenovo has also launched several new laptops under the ThinkPad and IdeaPad moniker. The company announced the products at the ongoing Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The new laptops bring slightly updated designs, better security and the latest 8th-generation Intel Core processors.  Let’s take a look at all the new laptops from the company.

Lenovo ThinkPad T490s, T490, T590, X390 and X390 Yoga

Lenovo has added three new models to its ThinkPad T series and two models in the X Yoga series. The ThinkPad T490s, T490 and the T590 are the latest slim, powerful, durable and portable laptops from the company. All the laptops in the range feature updated design and come with features such as ThinkShutter physical webcam security, ThinkPad Privacy Guard and Privacy Alert. The laptops also come with new ThinkPad BIOS that feature self-healing software. Lenovo has also included the Fibocom L860-GL CAT16 LTE on all the models, which help them attain Gigabit speeds via WWAN.

The new laptops also feature Wi-Fi 6 from Intel for faster connectivity and streaming. The displays on all the T series models support Dolby Vision and HDR. The T490 and the T490s comes with a low-energy 400nit FHD display which improves battery life. The laptops also feature dual microphones with far-field technology. Finally, Lenovo has equipped the laptops with the latest 8th-generation Intel Core processors.

The entire collection of the new T and X series laptops will be available for purchase in May this year. The ThinkPad T490s starts at $1,279, the T490 at $999, the T590 at $1,029, the X390 will start at $1,099 and the X390 Yoga has a starting price of $1,359.

Lenovo IdeaPad S540

The Lenovo IdeaPad S540 is available in 14-inch and 15-inch Full HD IPS displays with an aluminium chassis. Lenovo claims that this new ultra-slim laptop will provide longer battery life and better performance. The laptop comes equipped with the latest 8th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, which is paired with the NVIDIA GeForce MX250 GPU. You can also get the laptop with the AMD Ryzen 7 3700U CPU and the Radeon RX Vega 10 GPU. According to Lenovo, the IdeaPad S540 can last up to 12 hours on a single charge. It features RapidCharge technology, which allows for 2 hours of usage with just 15 minutes of charging.

The IdeaPad S540 is available in three colour options including Abyss Blue, Copper and Mineral Grey. It features Dolby Audio speakers and has the TrueBlock shutter on the webcam for privacy. The 14-inch Intel and NVIDIA based IdeaPad S540 will start at $1,020 and will be be available for purchase in March. The AMD based variant will start at $799 and will be available in April.

Lenovo IdeaPad S340

The IdeaPad S340 is the smaller variant of the S540. It is even slimmer and lighter, but still available in 14-inch or 15-inch displays. The laptop is also equipped with the latest 8th-generation Intel Core i7-8565U or the AMD Ryzen 7 3700U processors. For graphics, the Intel variant comes with the Nvidia GeForce MX250 GPU, whereas the AMD version has the Radeon RX Vega 10 graphics. Lenovo has included several AI features on the laptop and it supports both Amazon Alexa and Microsoft Cortana smart assistants.

Interested buyers will be able to purchase the AMD based IdeaPad S340 in April 2019 at a starting price of $629, and the Intel based variant will be available earlier in March for $679.

Lenovo Idea C340

Finally, the IdeaPad C340 is a convertible laptop that can be used as a tablet or a laptop. It features a touch display and also comes with a stylus. Lenovo did not disclose the hardware details of this laptop, but don’t expect it to be a slouch. It is available with either 14-inch or 15-inch displays and three colours. Lenovo claims that the laptop can provide up to 8 hours of usage on a single charge. It also features RapidCharge technology that allows it to charge faster. Some of the variants come with support for Active Pen, which allows users to sketch or make notes. The laptop also comes with an optional fingerprint reader.

The 14-inch AMD based model will be available in April at $679 and the Intel based variant will also start at the same price in March.
