Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV could be in the works

Highlights

  • Maruti Suzuki took the wraps off the eVX during the recently concluded 2023 Auto Expo
  • The automaker could also release electric versions of the Fronx crossover and the Jimny off-roader
  • Reports suggest the company has been working on an electric WagonR since at least 2018

Maruti Suzuki has begun 2023 on a high note, with the unveiling of the upcoming Fronx compact SUV, in addition to the Jimny 4×4 off-roader. The automaker could also be prepping an electric version of the iconic WagonR, based on a disguised vehicle displayed as part of Suzuki Motor Corporation’s global strategic plan. This would be a part of Maruti Suzuki’s plan to unveil six new electric cars by 2030.

There are other disguised vehicles highlighted on the company’s roadmap, potentially the EV variants of the Jimny and the Fronx, as 91Mobiles notes. While not much is known about the company’s plans for an electric car, the manufacturer did showcase the Wagon R Flex Fuel concept at the Auto Expo not too long ago.

The Maruti Suzuki eVX

The WagonR has long been a staple in the mid-range automobile market, and a dedicated EV in its name signals the company’s interest in launching EVs on a budget. While Tata Motors currently holds the crown with its affordable Tiago EV hatchback, the WagonR EV could provide a significant boost to Maruti Suzuki’s operations in India.

This isn’t the first time we’ve encountered reports of an electrified WagonR. Maruti Suzuki has reportedly been working on the concept since at least 2018. But the company’s top brass decided to delay its arrival owing to cost-related concerns. With the price tag being the petrol/CNG WagonR’s key selling point, Maruti Suzuki will have to contend with a higher selling price to accommodate the electric powertrain and other safety features.

Jimny and Fronx could also get electric variants

There’s been a lot of talk about the Jimny and Fronx since they were unveiled. Maruti Suzuki is expected to make them both available over the coming months. So electric versions of these automobiles could be a couple of years away, if not more.
