MediaTek Dimensity 800U will be the chip powering upcoming 5G smartphones in India. At IMC 2020, Mukesh Ambani announced that Jio will bring 5G to India during the second half of 2021. Now, MediaTek has announced details of its chipset powering 5G smartphones set to launch soon.
5G smartphones are not new and we recently saw Moto G 5G with Snapdragon 750G debut as the most affordable 5G smartphones. However, MediaTek is seen as the key element to make even more affordable smartphones with 5G support. The Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company has announced it will bring Dimensity 800U built on 7nm process as a mid-range offering.
MediaTek Dimensity 800U phones to launch in India by January 2021
The company further confirmed that smartphones powered by Dimensity 800U will be launched in January 2021. “The new premium smartphones will be launched in January 2021 and will be one of the first MediaTek powered 5G smartphones available in India,” the company said in a statement.
MediaTek has built a range of chipsets in the Dimensity family that bring 5G to smartphones across price segments. The Dimensity 800U, where U stands for ultra connected, will enable dual 5G SIM capabilities for future devices. MediaTek is not revealing which brands will launch smartphones based on Dimensity 800U in India.
However, we can expect smartphones from Redmi, Realme, OPPO and others. MediaTek claims that the 5G integrated chipset is capable of delivering download speeds up to 2.3Gbps. Other features include 5G Carrier Aggregation that helps with seamless handover between two 5G connection areas.
MediaTek Dimensity 800U top features
In terms of design, the chipset features an octa-core CPU with its ARM Cortex A76 cores clocked at up to 2.4GHz. With Dimensity 800U, you can expect smartphones offering support for displays with Full HD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Smartphone makers will also be able to support HDR10+ standard using MediaTek MiraVision PQ engine.
On the camera front, the chipset allows for up to quad camera setup and OEMs can use up to 64-megapixel sensors. There is also an integrated APU and ISP for AI camera features. The chipset also brings support for voice wakeup and dual-mic noise reduction technology.
While MediaTek is offering a timeline for the release of the device, there is no word on expected price. The Dimensity 1000 series is aimed at flagship smartphones and there is a possibility that these devices will be priced under Rs 30,000. It is a common wisdom that devices always precede the availability of network technology and MediaTek could fuel the growth of 5G smartphones in the country.
