MG 4 EV could make its Indian debut next month at the 2023 Auto Expo

  • The MG 4 EV is already available in Europe
  • MG Motor hasn’t confirmed the EV’s official launch date for India, however
  • This comes amidst reports of MG launching an affordable EV known as the Air

The MG ZS EV has established itself as the electric SUV to get in India since it was launched a few months ago. A new report by Autocar India suggests that MG Motor India may be mulling the release of another EV for the country, namely the MG 4 electric hatchback/crossover. Moreover, the automaker is reportedly going to show off the Indian variant of the EV at the upcoming 2023 Auto Expo, which will play host to a multitude of upcoming vehicles and future concepts.

In addition to the MG 4 EV, the company is also believed to showcase the rumoured MG Air affordable electric car at the annual auto event which is scheduled to begin on January 13, 2023. Furthermore, the manufacturer is also speculated to reveal a refreshed version of the MG Hector, though it’s unconfirmed if this will be a hybrid or a full-blown ICE model.

As 91Mobiles notes, the MG 4 EV is already available across Europe, where it competes with hatchbacks from the likes of Kia and Volkswagen. While an Indian release makes sense for an EV hatchback, particularly since the release of the Tata Tiago EV, which is still the cheapest fully electric hatchback in the market.

However, the MG 4 EV may be targeting a different segment based on the EV’s hardware. European customers can get it in 51kWh and 64kWh battery options, offering a WLTP-certified range of 350 km and 450 km, respectively. However, the real-world range is closer to 300 and 369 km, respectively, at least according to EV Database.

New competitors arriving in 2023

On the inside, the MG 4 EV will include a 10.25-inch infotainment screen complemented by a 7-inch  MID (multi-information display), a wireless charging dock, and a 360-degree parking camera combined with an array of sensors for trouble-free parking. Manufacturers like Mahindra are all set to enter the EV segment early next year, so the timing of MG’s new electric hatchback will be crucial in addition to pricing.
