MG Motors’ sister brand, Wuling, announced the Wuling Air EV, an affordable car with a compact design, in June in Indonesia. The publication claims that MG’s upcoming compact for India has an E230 codename and is based on the Wuling Air EV. It is likely to be showcased at the Auto Expo 2023, which will be held in January 2023.

Spy shots of upcoming compact MG EV for India

Like the Wuling Air EV, the upcoming compact electric vehicle by MG will be positioned as a small passenger car in India. According to the publication, it will have a wheelbase of 2,010mm and measure 2.9 meters in length. Hence, it will be around 400mm shorter than the Maruti Alto. The overall design could be similar to the Air EV.

As can be seen in the images, the entry-level MG EV will be a two-door style vehicle that can accommodate four passengers. While it will be based on the Air EV, it will offer some India-specific modifications. The Indonesian model has 12-inch steel wheels, but the Indian variant may arrive with alloy wheels. The images show that the EV will be a left-hand drive vehicle with a spare wheel at its rear.

The MG EV is expected to feature Tata AutoComp’s LFP battery pack with a capacity of around 20kWh to 25kWh. It may offer a driving range of around 150k on a single charge. The EV may come equipped with dual displays, one for infotainment and the other one for instrument cluster.

Other India-specific changes that are expected to be available on the MG EV include a stronger air conditioning system and better battery management. The company may offer its entry-level EV in multiple variants with premium interiors. At present, there is no information on the final marketing name of the vehicle.

Entry-level MG EV for India: specifications, price (expected)

The Wuling Air EV is yet to hit the roads. It is expected to carry a starting price of around Rs 6,50,000 in Indonesia. Last year, MG revealed that it would be launching an entry-level electric vehicle priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh in India. Hence, it is unclear whether MG’s compact will have a sub-Rs 10,000,000 price tag in the country.
