Mid-Range Snapdragon 670 Series Processor Leaked

On: February 9, 2018

Qualcomm has been actively pushing new processor variants for mid-budget smartphones to compete with MediaTek which is its closest rival. Recent leaks have surfaced telling us that we can expect mid-range smartphones coming in 2018 to ship with a Snapdragon 670 SoC. The company is likely to unveil the Snapdragon 670 processor which will power most mid-budget smartphones coming in the second half of 2018 very soon. Leaks regarding this processor have come through well-known tipster Roland Quandt. Earlier in December, Qualcomm announced its flagship processor for mobile devices dubbed as the Snapdragon 845, which is the successor of the current 835 processor.

The Snapdragon 670 will be the successor to the recently launched SD 660 processor which is expected to be featured on the upcoming Redmi Note 5. Similar to the Snapdragon 660, the 670 will also be an octa-core processor but with a different configuration. It will be configured with 6 low-powered cores and 2 high powered cores unlike the 4 lower and 4 high powered configurations on the 660.

Owing to this new configuration, the processor is expected to provide better battery performance as the high powered cores will kick-in as and when required. The low-end cores which are dubbed as the Kyro 300 Silver will be clocked at a max speed of 2.6GHz whereas the high powered Kyro 300 Gold will tick at a max speed of 1.7GHz. This gives us a clue that performance with this processor should be excellent.

The upcoming processor will offer support for up to WQHD display resolution which is 2560 x 1440 pixels. This means that manufacturers can pack in a super crisp display although it may be unlikely that it would happen considering the price point of phones offered in this range ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On the camera front, the processor will be able to handle a dual-rear camera setup with ease. Although there isn’t sufficient information on what the upper limit would be, but we can expect it to support a 13-megapixel + 23-megapixel combination. It is speculated that Qualcomm may be looking to launch this processor at MWC 2018 in Barcelona later this month.
