Minecraft, the sandbox video game created by Markus “Notch” Persson in the Java programming language, is one of the most popular game titles. Since its debut, the game has been ported to several other platforms and is recognised as the “best-selling video game of all time”.

Minecraft is estimated to have sold over 200 million copies and as of 2020, there are 126 million monthly active users. The allure of Minecraft is such that Microsoft decided to spend $2.5 billion in 2014 to acquire the Mojang and Minecraft intellectual property. With a number of spin-off games, Minecraft is not just another game but one that spans cultures.

What is Minecraft?

As mentioned above, Minecraft is a sandbox video game from Swedish game studio Mojang created in the Java programming language. Jens Bergensten took over the development when the game was fully released in November 2011. Apart from sandbox, Minecraft also falls in the survival genre of games.

In the game, players explore a blocky, procedurally-generated 3D world where the terrain is virtually infinite. Players may discover and extract raw materials, and even craft tools and items. They can also build structures or earthworks. Players can fight computer-controlled mobs depending on game mode. In survival mode, the players must acquire resources to build the world and maintain health.

There is also a creative mode, where players get access to unlimited resources. And of course, players can modify the game to create new gameplay, mechanics, items and assets. Calling Minecraft a world within a world would be a massive understatement. This 3D virtual world is so massive that it has parodies, adaptations, merchandise and even annual MineCon conventions.
