About a week ago, popular Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi launched an upgrade to their custom Android ROM, MIUI 9. This upgrade promises to bring several improvements and added features to Xiaomi devices. According to a Chinese website MyDrivers.com, Xiaomi will begin rolling out the updates from August 11 starting with its flagship device for the year, the Mi 6 and the Redmi Note 4X.
On the same site, it has also been mentioned that 11 other devices from Xiaomi will receive updates. These devices include – Mi Max, Max 2, Redmi 4X, Mi Mix, Mi Note 2, Mi 4s, Mi5, Mi 5s and 5s Plus, and 4c and Mi 5c. Other low-end devices will be able to experience MIUI 9 from September when the company starts their third round of updates.Apart from these devices, the newly launched Mi 5X will come with MIUI 9 built over Android Nougat out of the box.
Xiaomi has been one of the very few OEMs which has really retained support to older devices in terms of OS update roll out. According to Xiaomi, the lowest device that will support MIUI 9 is the Redmi 1S, Xiaomi’s first device in India, which was launched in July 2014. This comes as close as possible to Apple, that is known to provide updates to devices up to 5 years old. Although the older devices will run a new MIUI, they will still run an older version of Android on top of which the custom ROM will run.
MIUI 9 will bring across many new smart features to Xiaomi’s devices such as Image Search, App launcher and a dedicated Assistant. In addition to this, the company also claims to have made an interface with a blazing fast app launching time. There are minor upgrades and multiple bugs that have been squashed under the hood as well.
