More details emerge on MG’s upcoming affordable electric car

Highlights

  • MG is likely to unveil the affordable EV at next year’s Auto Expo
  • This EV will leverage the architecture of the Wuling Air, an entry-level electric car available in China and Indonesia
  • Previous reports have indicated that the EV could compete with the Tiago EV in terms of pricing

MG’s upcoming affordable EV is in the news lately. We’ve already learned that the electric car will use the same platform as the Wuling Air EV. This has given us a decent idea about what to expect from the company’s supposed rival to the Tata Tiago EV. An earlier report suggested that while the compact MG EV will take on Tata’s offering, it may have a slightly higher price tag.

Regardless, the Indian EV market would welcome the addition of another affordable EV, as the options are fairly limited at the moment. Automobile enthusiasts will recall that the Air EV was spied during testing in India recently, shedding some light on the base dimensions of the car, despite the heavy camouflage (pictured below).

Now, TOI reports that China-based automaker Wuling has supplied 300 Air EV models for the upcoming G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia. While we can predict what the final MG-branded EV would look like, it’s unlikely to differ greatly from Wuling’s offering. However, there are likely going to be a few distinctive changes, specifically in terms of interiors, and perhaps body colour options.

Despite the Air EV’s ability to accommodate only four people, it could appeal to a wide section of the Indian masses. However, if previous reports are accurate, MG could be at a disadvantage if the pricing is higher than the Tiago EV, a 5-seater.

Wuling markets the Air EV in two battery configurations — 17.3 kWh and 26.7 kWh — advertised to run for up to 200 km and 300 km on a single charge. We may have to wait a few months before getting to see MG’s affordable EV as the company isn’t expected to unveil it until early next year. TOI speculates that the car could also be showcased during the 2023 Auto Expo scheduled to take place in January.
