The year 2018 has just begun and smartphone makers have started gearing up to refresh their popular phones from last year. Motorola is no exception to the trend. The Moto E5 was revealed through renders which have displayed what we can expect from the company. The smartphone will bring a new design change which we can also expect to see in other offerings from the brand in this year. Here’s what we know so far.
Design and Display
The upcoming Moto E5 is expected to see a design overhaul. It is expected to sport a metal design to add to its feel and durability. The fingerprint sensor is expected to be relocated on the back. This will be the second smartphone by the company that will have this sensor on the back, the first being the Moto M. Unlike the Moto M, this phone will integrate the sensor into the Moto Logo. This will certainly add to its look and aesthetics. Up front, the phone will sport what seems like an unchanged display from the Moto E4. The phone could rock an18:9 display aspect ratio and add to its prowess, however, considering how rigorously Moto E series phones are priced, it does seem unlikely. A Full-HD display will also be a great addition to its spec-sheet.
On the performance front, the upcoming device is likely to feature a MediaTek processor considering its price point. It should also feature up to 2GB of RAM for multitasking and light gaming. In terms of storage, the smartphone is likely to ship in a 16GB variant. On the brighter side, Motorola does include a 3-slot tray, so you should be able to use two SIM cards and a microSD card together. On the software side of things, the phone most likely will come with Android Nougat out of the box with an update to Android Oreo later on. It would definitely be nice to see the phone coming with Oreo out of the box.
In terms of optics, Motorola hasn’t been known in the past to incorporate great camera sensors on its device, but this year could be different. The Moto E4 being a budget smartphone isn’t likely to come with a fancy dual-rear camera setup. Instead, as per the leaked images, it will feature a single rear camera accompanied by a LED flash. Up front, the device will sport a selfie shooter which will also be accompanied by a front-facing flash. This would mean that the cameras should be able to take good images in low-light conditions.
In terms of connectivity, the phone is expected to offer support for all the usual solutions like 2G, 3G and 4G with VoLTE. It would also be nice if the phone included dual-band WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n instead of the single band support offered on the Moto E4 and E4 Plus. On the bottom, as per the images, the phone may still feature a micro USB port instead of a Type-C port.
Through the leaked images, very little has been left for us to imagine. We can expect the launch of this smartphone as soon as next month at MWC event, however, the brand could stick to their yearly cycle and decide to launch it in June. Nonetheless, if these leaks do turn out to be true, this design trend is likely to also come to the G-series and X-series coming this year with the added benefit of bezel-less displays.
