Moto M vs Moto G4 Plus: In Search Of A Better Motorola Phone

Motorola phones have become highly popular in the sub Rs. 20,000 market. The Moto G series has now grown significantly and is available across a wider price range with slightly different hardware. In an attempt to take over the entire segment Motorola and Lenovo launched the Moto M. The M is a complete new approach by Motorola and sits just below the 20k mark. I personally liked the Moto M and had written about it extensively in my hands-on review. But I am frequently asked, Moto M vs Moto G4 Plus which one should I pick? Today, I try to answer just that.

Display & Design:

Moto M vs Moto G4 Plus

The Moto M and the Moto G4 Plus are quite different, the M sports an all metal body while the G4 uses plastic in its construction. The build quality of both the phones are really good, but the Moto M wins this thanks to its premium metal build. Both the phones are equipped with fingerprint scanners. The Moto G4 Plus has a fingerprint scanner on the front, while the Moto M has it positioned on the back. If you are very particular about the location of the scanner, then pick a phone as per your preference.

Both the Moto phones sport a 5.5 inch Full HD display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. However, there is a difference in the technology used. The Moto M used an AMOLED display while the Moto G4 Plus uses an LCD panel. The AMOLED display offers better contrast over an LCD and is more efficient. I prefer a vivid display hence the Moto M is my personal preference here.

On paper, both the phones sport 16-megapixel cameras with PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus) and dual LED flash. The Moto G4 Plus also gets laser autofocus that the M misses out on. This gives the Moto G4 Plus a slight edge in terms of Macro photography. That aside, both the phones click good photos. The selfie camera is where the real difference is. The Moto M has an 8-megapixel selfie camera compared to the 5-megapixel camera on the Moto G4 Plus. The Moto M also gets better camera app along with a beautify mode.

This is the part where the phones are completely different. The Moto G4 Plus sports a Snapdragon 617 with 2GB/3GB RAM options, while the Moto M has a Helio P15 processor with 3GB/4GB RAM variants. It can be said that the phones are quite potent when it comes to hardware. We have heard of the Moto G4 Plus having a few heating issues while there are no reports of any issues with the Moto M. The M also gets better internal storage options (32GB/64GB) than the Moto G Plus (16GB/32GB).

Moto G4 Plus Battery

The difference in the battery capacity of these two phone is marginal. The G4 Plus has a 3000mAh non-removable battery while the Moto M has a 3050mAh battery. The processor in the M is more efficient, and it should help the phone last a little longer than the G4 Plus. Both, the phones support Motorola’s Turbo Charging but come with different ports. The G4 Plus has the MicroUSB port while the Moto M has the new USB Type-C port.

Winner: Moto M

Well it’s quite obvious now, isn’t it? The Moto M is the clear winner here. The G4 Plus isn’t a bad phone, but the Moto M offers more value for your money. If you are on a strict budget and don’t wish to spend a lot, the Moto G4 Plus is a good pick. But if you can afford the Moto M, it is clearly the better phone of the two.
