New OTT Releases This Week (October 17 to October 23, 2022): Where to watch Ammu, Tripling Season 3, Krishna Vrinda Vihari, Bimbisara, Descendant, Pettaikalli, and more

In the third week of the month, i.e., from October 17 to 23, 2022, many OTT giants have planned the release of new shows and sequels. Netflix’s popular show Love is Blind, TVF’s drama Tripling, Hoichoi’s one of the first shows, Hello! will release with a new season.

Meanwhile, Indian OTT platforms focus on regional releases with Thank You and King Fish on SunNxt, Bimbisara on Zee5, Ammu on Amazon Prime Video (India), and more.

Fans interested in watching reality shows, documentaries and infotainment will also have something on their ‘must-watch’ list as Netflix brings the Sundance Award Winning documentary, Descendant, on the platform. Meanwhile popular paranormal show, Unsolved Mysteries also returns with a new season this week.

Thank You – Sun NXT

Directed by Vikram K. Kumar, Thank You is a Telugu-language romantic film revolving around a man who revisits his past and reviews important, emotional moments of this life. Abhi lands in New York with Rao’s help and meets Priya. A start-up enthusiast, Abhi designs an app which he believes can revolutionise diagnosis. However, upon seeking help from Rao for funding, he faces disappointment and rejection. However, Priya offers $15,000 for him to launch his app. Eventually, they fall in love and move in together.

The success of his app gets to his head, and their relationship starts suffering, so much so that Priya refuses to marry him.  Over a period of time, she realises about being pregnant and tells her friend Shialaja about her relationship with her live-in boyfriend, Abhi, who asks her to give him another chance and rectify the mistake. What follows are events which showcase if Abhi and Priya’s relationship get better with time or if will they grow apart.

King Fish – Sun NXT

Bhaskar Verma, a common man with a normal life, working in the real estate sector, is visited by an advocate who tells him that his uncle, Dashrath, hailing from a royal family, is planning to write his will. However, Bhaskar will get crores of money only if he meets his uncle. At first, the reluctant man hesitates, but the offer, tempting as it sounds, pushes him to visit. What follows is a series of events which make the film interesting.

Fans and critics appreciated the thought of the film; however, issues were raised with the execution. Kingfish, written and directed by Anoop Menon, made a low collection at the box office.

Unsolved Mysteries 3 – Netflix


The show which began with seven specials slowly became an audience favourite and the makers plan to release a new season of Unsolved Mysteries, a mystery documentary television show, revolving around the paranormal and cold cases.

Presented by Raymond Burr, Karl Malden, and Robert Stack, the show was first featured in 1987 on NBC, and soon continued as a series from 1988. NBC took over the show in 1997, however, after poor rating, the show stopped airing in 1999. Makers revived the show again in 2000 and released a new season in 2001. After unforeseen circumstances, the show was released again in 2008 ending in 2010.

Cut to 2019, with the increasing popularity of the OTT platforms, Netflix announced a reboot of the series in 2020, splitting the first season into two volumes of six episodes each. The third volume was announced recently and will stream in October 2022.

Directed by Taketoshi Sado and starring popular Japanese singer, Risa Oribe, LiSA Another Great Day is a documentary that follows the humble artist who has made several mistakes in her life and has been confronted for the same. It takes the viewers on a journey that showcases how her love for Avril Lavigne pushed her to start a band, and eventually become one of Japan’s leading artists.

The year 2021 marked her 10th year anniversary and she decided to produce the album LiSA and present her successful career of becoming a rock singer. Fans will be able to watch her rough times, passion, ambition to create music, phases she dealt with and confidence in her dreams. But what is she set to pursue next and make her important decision for the new phase of life, becomes the crux of this documentary and also the vital message of her 10th-anniversary project.

Somebody Feed Phil – Netflix

The popular American TV travel documentary series, Somebody Feed Phil, is back with a new season on Netflix. The show began in 2018 and has had a successful run for five seasons, one every year, with the last season released in May 2022. Sharing more information, Netflix announced the renewal for the sixth season which was filmed right after the last.

Phil Rosenthal’s love for food is well-known and he has been known for doing similar shows in the past. A successor of his previous PBS show, I’ll Have What Phil’s Having, this show, takes him to different cities where he features the cuisine of the episode thereby shedding light on charities and non-profit organizations from the locality. Besides this, he is also known to call his parents and other guests on the show making it entertaining for the viewers. Celebrities like Ray Romano, Brad Garrett, Judy Gold, and others have participated in the show as a part of the special segment.

Presented as a fantasy film, the story of The School for Good and Evil revolves around Sophie and Agatha, best friends, who land up in a situation – an epic battle – between the heroes and the villains focusing on protecting the balance between Good and Evil. They are on opposite sides and will go through a series of situations where fortunes are reversed, friendship is tested. In the meantime, they have to also figure out a way to return home.,

The School of Good and Evil is based on the novel by Soman Chainani. The screenplay of the film has been written by David Magee and Feig.

Ammu is married to her neighbour Ravi, and their parents are convinced of their relationship. The couple also realises that they can start living together and believe that this is a match made in heaven. However, it is until after the marriage that Ammu comes across the other side of Ravi, the demonic part where he tortures her for the entire day, leaving her bruised and damaged. She is disappointed by the choice and blames her for taking the decision. But not until long, when she plans to fight and stand for herself, thereby teaching him a lesson.

Makers will also release Ammu in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.

Descendant – Netflix

Descendant is an award-winning documentary that follows the story of the survivors who were carried as enslaved Africans to the United States on Clotilda, the last ship. Makers of the documentary aim to reclaim their story.

Directed by Margaret Brown, Descendant was awarded at the Sundance Film Festival and was also the official selection at the 60th New York Film Festival. Members of Africatown from Alabama take us through the stories and history that brought them from Africans to the United States. As per reports, it took 40 years for the ship to arrive in America, where it was later burned, and its existence was denied.

Love is Blind: Season 3 – Netflix

Fifteen men and women from one metropolitan area are finding love. They date each other for over a week in pods built for the purpose. All they can do is talk, but without seeing each other. Once they are comfortable, the format shifts to speed-dating which can continue as longer dates can extend as a marriage proposal, dating face to face, committed, and engaged, and eventually leading to ways for spending time and getting to as partners, before they are given the first opportunity get physically intimate.

The couple also gets a chance to live in the same apartment complex, meet their parents, friends and families, exploring issues such as finances, recreation, personal habits, and more. The show focuses on allowing them to spend time and do everything together, mutually, before they plan to get married. The highlight of the show is when the decision happens at the altar, where each of them gets to decide if to say “I do” or not.

The concept became popular instantly so much so that it was also made in Brazilian and Japanese languages.

Oke Oka Jeevitham/Kanam – SonyLIV

Sharwanand and Amala Akkineni starrer science fiction drama film, Oke Oka Jeevitham has had a successful theatrical run. The movie which was released in September 2022 was well-received by the audience and the makers have now decided to release it online on SonyLIV.

Written and directed by debutant Shree Karthick, the film was also made in Tamil simultaneously and was titled Kanam. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, the film revolves around Aadhi and his friends who take a decision to set their present right. However, this decision isn’t simple and to achieve their goal, they will have to take a ride with time with a help of a scientist. Meanwhile, neither of them has an idea of the plans time has for them in the past or the present.

Besides the above-mentioned cast, the film also has several popular names in the team. Both the Tamil and Telugu versions have different supporting casts from the respective film industries. Oke Oka Jeevitham/Kanam was scheduled to complete the shoot in 2020, however, the team experienced a delay of eight months due to the pandemic.

Oke Oka Jeevitham will also release in Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil (Kanam).

From Scratch 2022 – Netflix

Created by Attica Locke and Tembi Locke and based on Tembi Locke’s memoir of the same name, From Scratch is an American drama series revolving around a woman from America who falls in love with a man from Sicily while pursuing her studies in Italy.

What follows, through the eight-episode show, is a series of incidents where the relationship blossoms through several ups and downs, and unexpected scenarios. From scratch boasts of a reputed team of crew members with Attica Locke as the showrunner. Besides Attica and Tembi, renowned names such as Reese Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, Richard Abate, Jermaine Johnson, and Will Rowbotham also serve as executive producers.

The Peripheral – Amazon Prime Video

The Peripheral is a show based on the book of the same name, written by William Gibson. The series is created by Scott Smith and produced by Amazon.

Presented as an American science fiction TV series, Peripheral is about a woman discovering her alternate reality and eventually getting to know a dark future of her own.

Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who were associated with Westworld, serve as executive producers, of the show, and are accompanied by Athena Wickham, Steve Hoban, and Vincenzo Natali. As per reports, the makers have already announced the second season which is in development

Tripling S3 – Zee5

Created by TVF, the third season of the popular show Tripling will soon be streaming online. Developed by Sameer Saxena and written by Akarsh Khurana and Sumeet Vyas, the show revolves around three siblings and their banters in daily life. In the first two seasons, the makers focused on the misunderstanding, dependency, and love-hate bond between the leads. In the upcoming season, the narrative has shifted to their bond with their parents, who plan to end their relationship. The news of divorce disturbs their children, who try to find ways to strengthen their familial bond. What follows through the episodes is the ups-downs and an emotional roller coaster that the family has to experience while the kids try to convince their parents to give their relationship another chance.

Makers have stated that the story will reflect ‘deeper and more complex emotions and interpersonal relationships come to the surface.

Hello! Remember Me – Hoichoi

After three successful seasons of Hello, one of the first and the most popular shows on Hoichoi, the makers -Sahana Dutta and the team – are back with a new show, Hello! Remember me? Starring Ishaa Saha and Paayel Sarkar

The first three seasons featured actors like Raima Sen, Priyanka Sarkar, and Joy Sengupta in important roles and reports state that the shoot of the fourth season was also completed recently. Presented as a mix of drama and psychological thriller, the show focused on Nina, Nandita, and Anonyo, where a series of MMS and SMS with romantic messages expose the relationship brewing between Anonyo and Nina. Twists were introduced in season 2 which take the story to another route showcasing conspiracy.

With the third season, the makers introduced new characters and brought the existing plot to a conclusion. Not much has been revealed about the new characters, however, the excitement of bringing the show again to Hoichoi has already been shared by several fans on social media.

Bimbisara – Zee5

The film is based in two different time zones – the present and 500 BCE.

A troop of soldiers chase a wanderer and his companion who run into the forest and eventually fall into a sinkhole which takes them to a cave. It is here that the skeletons put the soldiers in the mysterious mirrors and as one of them breaks, a demon is liberated. Now happy, he rewards the wanderer with a mirror that can help him with time travel.

Cut to the present where Shastri and Kethu attempt to open Bimbisara‘s treasure and the former is killed during the attempt to save his son, Subramanya Shastri. He is an acclaimed doctor who is curious about the treasure and decides to open the same to fulfil his father’s wish. What does he find and what happens in the quest to become a part of the time travel forms Bimbisara’s story.

Pettaikaali – Aha Video

Created by the eminent Vetrimaaran, Pettaikaali, focuses on the traditional sport of Jallikattu. As per reports, this will be the first-ever web series to be made based on this sport and the makers have invested in a reputed team which includes promising technicians and crew. The music for the feature has been given by Santhosh Narayanan and Velraj.

Buzz also reveals that the cinematography will definitely make a mark on the audience and the series will offer a never-seen-before experience. The story of the show revolves around a man who tames a bull using tricks, that belongs to the girl he loves. With the brewing relationship, the enmity between the clan is rekindled. To ensure he faces no insult and also to win hearts over like a real man from the sport, he encourages himself to learn the techniques of taming the bull for real.

Media reports also reveal that Vetrimaaran is planning to make a movie on a similar theme with ace actor Suriya, however, not much has been revealed about the project.

20th Century Girl – Netflix

Directed and written by Bang Woo-ri, this South Korean drama film, revolves around friendship and first love set in the time of 1999, one year before the end of the 20th century. Na Bo-ra and Yeon-du are friends and the latter has a crush on Baek Hyun-jin, a boy from the same school. She doesn’t know much about him except his name. She has to travel to the US for heart surgery and seeks Bo-ra’s help to find out about Hyun-jin during her absence.

He gets close to Poong Un-while trying to find out more about Hyun-jin, but learns that she has found her first love. What follows is a sweet, pure and heartbreaking relationship, which later revives in her teenage.

ONI: Thunder God’s Tale

Liger – Disney+ Hotstar

Written and directed by Puri Jagannadh, the sports action film, Liger, which was released recently, is set to make its digital premiere in Hindi.

Lion Balram is an MMA enthusiast, and after his father’s death, he along with his mother move to Mumbai with the hope that he will turn into an MMA champion. She takes him to Christopher who trains him. However, during his training, he falls in love with Tanya, who after knowing about his stammering issue leaves him due to embarrassment. Determined with his sport, he wins the national championship and moves to train for International Championship, which is sponsored by her father. Soon he finds out that Tanya is kidnapped and eventually confronts Tanya’s father thereby deciding to save Tanya by missing the final match. What happens further are sequences where the audience will find out if he saves her, wins her back and the challenges he faces with his passion.

Kavi Samrat – Aha Telugu

The Telugu-language biopic, Kavi Samrat, made on one of the eminent writers, Viswanatha Satyanarayana, will premiere directly on Aha as the OTT platform has acquired the direct digital rights of the feature.

Viswanatha Satyanarayana, born in September 1895, was known for his literary work present in the form of short plays, novels, poetry, speeches etc. covering a wide range of topics. His work was also recognised with the Jnanapith Award in 1970 and Padma Bhushan in 1971. Produced by LB Sriram under Life Is Beautiful Creations, and written, and directed by Savith C Chandra, the documentary will be a treat to watch for literary enthusiasts which are intrigued to know his life up close with a curiosity to know personal information. Kavi Samrat will also feature many personalities like LB Sriram, Sree Anvesh, Ananth, Swapna, Rakhi Ayyanger, lyricist Ramajogaiah Sastry, and producer Raj Kandukuri.

Maker initially planned a theatrical release of the documentary, however, later opted for a direct to digital release.

Krishna Vrinda Vihari – Netflix

The Telugu-language romantic comedy film, Krishna Vrinda Vihari, after its theatrical run, is all set to release on the OTT platform. Krishna comes from a strict Brahmin family and falls in love with Vrinda, his colleague. Initially, she doesn’t accept his love, but soon, they form a bond and Krishna wins her over. Problems brew when he has to inform his family and convince them of the relationship. He manages to persuade them and as a trick, he informs them about marrying Vrinda. This brings a shock to the family and how they deal with this situation and how this adds more trouble to their lives is the crux of the film.

Fakt Mahilao Maate – ShemarooMe

Over the last few years, Gujarati films have garnered a loyal fan base. With films like Chello Divas, Hellaro, Chhello Show, and others, fans have shown interest in similar features, which has given a push to the filmmakers to explore different forms of storytelling and experiment.
