CES 2020: Nikon D780 and Coolpix P950 launched, prices start at Rs 66,995

At the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020, we have seen a boatload of laptops and TVs being launched so far. However, CES 2020 is also the launchpad for flagship DSLRs from the leading camera equipment makers. Canon had launched its much-anticipated upgrade to the EOS-1D X,  the EOS-1D X Mark III at the event earlier today, which is touted to be brand’s most powerful camera to date. Now, rival brand Nikon has gone ahead and launched its flagship Nikon D780 full-frame DSLR and the Coolpix P950 superzoom camera. The company also launched a couple of lenses at the event including NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S and AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR.

The Nikon D780 is an FX-format full-frame DSLR that ships with a 24.5-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, which is backed by Nikon’s Expeed 6 image processor. Nikon has also improved the ISO range and it now goes up to 51,200 natively and is expandable to 2,04,800. The company has also improved the shutter speed, which can now shoot even at up to 1/8,000 of a second. The continuous shooting has also been improved at 7fps with mechanical shutter and 12fps with an electronic shutter in live view.  The optical viewfinder retains the 51-point autofocus (AF) system with 15 cross-type AF points from its predecessor, D750. However, in live view, the D780 uses 273 PDAF points that has been borrowed from the Nikon Z6 mirrorless camera. This feature allows the D780 to enable eye-detection autofocus, which is a first for the brand. Nikon has also improved video recording capabilities as the D780 can shoot 4K videos at 30fps without pixel binning. The camera also offers 10-bit N-log and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), which allows professional HDR recording and post-production.

Nikon claims that the D780 has better weather-proofing, which has led to the removal of the integrated camera flash. Users will need to invest in a cold/hot shoe flash if they want to use it. In terms of connectivity and ports, the Nikon D780 features a USB-C port, two UHS-II supported memory card slots, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The display on the camera is a tilting 3.2-inch LCD touchscreen unit.

As for the Nikon Coolpix P950, it flaunts an 83x optical zoom range as its key highlight. The camera comes in as a successor to the Nikon P900 and brings in a number of improvements. For starters, the latest launch features AW support, 4K video capability and an improved electronic viewfinder with a 2.3 million dot resolution. The lens used on the Coolpix P950 is 1/2.3-inch type, 16-megapixel image sensor, which is the same as the P900. The Nikon Coolpix P950 ships with 3.2-inch vari-angle, approximately 921k-dot TFT LCD monitor with an anti-reflection coating.

Nikon has also revealed the Indian pricing and availability of the two new launches. The Nikon D780 will be made available for purchase across India towards the end of this month. Nikon will sell the camera in two variants – body only and Nikon Digital camera D780 kit with a 24-120mm VR lens. The former will set buyers back by Rs 1,98,995 and the latter will cost Rs 2,42,495. The Nikon CoolPix P950, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 66,995 and will be available in the second week of February.
