HMD Global and OPPO have both launched their latest mid-range smartphones called the Nokia 5.3 and OPPO A53 in India today. While OPPO A53 is the world’s first smartphone to be powered by the newest Snapdragon 460 SoC, the Nokia 5.3 features the Snapdragon 665 SoC.
Both new launches feature 13-megapixel primary cameras, Android 10, and up to 6GB RAM. The newest smartphones will compete with tough contenders from the likes of Realme and Xiaomi in India. Let’s take a look at how they fare against each other as well as the similarly-priced Redmi Note 9 Pro.
Nokia 5.3 vs OPPO A53 vs Redmi Note 9 Pro: price in India
The Nokia 5.3 is being offered in two variants – 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB RAM + 64GB storage. The pricing stands at Rs 13,999 for the 4GB model and Rs 15,499 for the 6GB variant. The smartphone will go on sale starting September 1st with the pre-bookings opening from August 25th on Amazon as well as Nokia’s website.
The OPPO A53 is also being offered in 4GB and 6GB RAM variants, but while former comes with 64GB storage, the latter offers 128GB. The base variant is the most affordably priced among all three phones at Rs 12,990, whereas the top-end model has been priced at Rs 15,490. The smartphone has already gone up for sale on Flipkart.
Lastly, the Redmi Note 9 Pro comes in three variants – 4GB + 64GB, 4GB + 128GB and 6GB + 128GB, thus giving more options to buyers. The base variant has been priced at Rs 13,999, the 4GB + 128GB model at Rs 15,999 and lastly the top-end variant at Rs 16,999. The smartphone can be picked up from Amazon, Mi.com and Mi Home stores.

Nokia 5.3 vs OPPO A53 vs Redmi Note 9 Pro: display
The Nokia 5.3 is the odd one out here with its waterdrop notch on top. The smartphone features a 6.55-inch HD+ LCD display with a 20:9 aspect ratio. There is a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the top for protection against scratches and scuffs.
The OPPO A53 ships with a 6.53-inch punch-hole display with HD+ resolution and a 20:9 aspect ratio. However, the phone offers a super smooth 90Hz refresh rate along with a touch sampling rate of 120Hz. Protecting the display on OPPO A53 is a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
Lastly, the Redmi Note 9 Pro comes with the largest display of the lot, measuring 6.67-inches with a 20:9 aspect ratio. The screen features a punch-hole camerea, FHD+ resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

Coming to the performance, the Nokia 5.3 is powered by the Snapdragon 665 SoC, which is an 11nm octa-core processor with a 2.2GHz clock speed. Notably, this is the same processor that powered the A53’s predecessor, OPPO A52. Speaking of A53, the smartphone is the first to come with a Snapdragon 460 SoC. Despite being an older chipset, the Snapdragon 665 has an upper hand here. However, the Redmi Note 9 Pro wins this round with the more powerful Snapdragon 720G gaming chipset.
In terms of configurations, the Redmi Note 9 Pro again comes to the fore with three configurations – 4GB + 64GB, 4GB + 128GB and 6GB + 128GB. The OPPO A53 offers two models including 4GB + 64GB and 6GB + 128GB. The Nokia 5.3 also offers the same RAM options as the A53, but both models have 64GB storage.
On the software front, all three devices boot Android 10, but the Nokia 5.3 gets an upper hand thanks to the stock Android interface and two years of guaranteed OS updates. The Redmi Note 9 Pro has MIUI 11 on top whereas the OPPO A53 features ColorOS 7.

The Nokia 5.3 and Redmi Note 9 Pro feature quad-cameras, whereas the OPPO A53 features triple rear cameras. Speaking of the A53 first, it comes with a 13-megapixel primary camera with a 2-megapixel bokeh sensor and 2-megapixel macro lens.
The Nokia 5.3 also features a 13-megapixel primary camera, 2-megapixel depth sensor and 2-megapixel macro lens, but gets an additional 5-megapixel ultra-wide lens.
The Redmi Note 9 Pro wins this round with its 48-megapixel Samsung GM2 primary sensor backed by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, 5-megapixel macro lens and 2-megapixel depth sensor.
Coming to selfies. the Nokia 5.3 is equipped with an 8-megapixel snapper on the front. The other two smartphones offer higher resolution 16-megapixel selfie cameras.

The Nokia 5.3 loses out with a smaller 4,000mAh battery and 10W charging support. The OPPO A53 and Redmi Note 9 Pro feature 5,000mAh and 5,020mAh batteries respectively, both with support for 18W fast charging.

The OPPO A53 is an ideal choice for those who are looking for a super smooth 90Hz display, whereas the Nokia 5.3 will appeal to Android purists thanks to its stock Android 10 interface with guaranteed future updates.
