Since 2017, HMD Global has been launching new phones at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) annual tech trade show which is usually held in the month of February. This year the Finnish firm could not announce new devices at the event, since it was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. Just as other smartphone brands held dedicated launch events to announce their devices, HMD Global too held its own livestream event today to unveil the Nokia 8.3 5G as its first ever 5G-capable smartphone. It also unveiled other devices such as Nokia 1.3, Nokia 5.3 and a music-focused Nokia 5310 feature phone.
Nokia 8.3 5G specifications and features
The glass-bodied Nokia 8.3 5G smartphone features a 6.81-inch IPS LCD PureDisplay with a punch-hole at its top-left corner. It supports 20:9 aspect ratio as it produces full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels resolution. The PureDisplay can scale SDR content to HDR. The camera cutout on the screen houses a 24-megapixel ZEISS lens with f/2.0 aperture.
The Snapdragon 765G mobile platform is present under the hood of the Nokia 8.3 5G which enables 5G connectivity on the device. With coverage for wider 5G bands than its rivals, the Finnish claims that the Nokia 8.3 5G is the “first truly global 5G smartphone.” The handset comes in RAM versions of 6GB and 8GB. When it comes to storage, the phone offers users with 64GB and 128GB choices. There is a dedicated microSD card slot for more storage.
The Nokia 8.3 5G has a PureView quad camera setup with ZEISS optics housed inside a camera module on the rear. It features a primary sensor of 64-megapixel primary shooter with f/1.89 aperture, a 120-degree12-megapixel ultrawide lens with autofocus, a 2-megapixel macro lens with a focal length of 3.6mm and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The phone offers photography features such as dual LED flash, 4K video shooting with OZO audio, video HDR, Action Cam mode and ZEISS Cinema Capture and editor.
The Nokia 8.3 5G is an Android One phone running on the purest version of Android 10. Since it is an Android One device, it will two years of OS upgrades and 3 years of monthly security updates. The handset features a dedicated Google Assistant button. The device is backed by a 4,500mAh battery which carries support for 18W rapid charging.
The power button the right side of the Nokia 8.3 5G is integrated with a fingerprint reader. The phone also supports biometric face unlock. The handset supports connectivity features like dual-SIM, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC, USB-C and 3.5mm headphone slot.
Nokia 8.3 5G price and availability
The Nokia 8.3 5G will be available for purchase in summer in Europe. The 6GB RAM + 64GB storage and 8GB RAM + 128GB storage editions of the smartphone are priced at 599 euros (~Rs 47,800) and 649 euros (~Rs 51,900). It comes in blue colour only. The hue is dubbed as Polar Night by the company.
