MWC 2019: nubia Alpha wearable smartphone with 4-inch flexible display announced

Samsung and Huawei launched their first foldable phones in the past week. At the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 tech expo, ZTE’s sub-brand nubia has done something unique, as it has unveiled the nubia Alpha as the world’s first smartwatch with a foldable display, that can be wrapped around the wrist like a bracelet. Apart from featuring a foldable screen, the smartwatch also offers phone call functionality.

The nubia Alpha smartwatch features a 4-inch flexible OLED screen provided by Visionox. It offers a display resolution of 960 x 192 pixels and an aspect ratio of 36:9. Users can wrap and unwrap the flexible nubia Alpha without worrying about causing any damage to its display. The Chinese firm has claimed that it can be bent 100,000 times. It features a water-resistant chassis that is made out of stainless steel, whereas its screen is coated with heat-resistant polymide.

The Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC powers the nubia Alpha smartwatch along with 1GB of RAM. The native storage available on the device is 8GB. nubia’s smartwatch runs an Android-based customised operating system that carries support for motion gestures along with AIM (Air Interaction Mechanics). It also includes support for mobile payments, fitness tracking, heart rate monitoring and sleep monitoring. The nubia Alpha is packed with a decent battery of 500mAh capacity provides 1-2 days of regular use, according to the company.

The nubia Alpha can be used for capturing photos through its 5-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture. The camera can be also used for video calls.

The watch comes in two variants – Bluetooth-only and eSIM. The nubia Alpha eSIM edition can be used for making phone calls and offers 4G LTE connectivity. The Bluetooth-only variant can connect to the web through Wi-Fi.

In April, the black variant of the Bluetooth-enabled nubia Alpha smartwatch will be hitting markets like Europe and North America with a price tag of €449 (~Rs 36,240) euros. The eSIM edition will be available in the same regions by the third quarter of this year for €549 (~Rs 44,300). There is an 18k gold version of the smartwatch that carries a price tag of €640 (~Rs 51,660).

Other nubia Devices at MWC 2019

Apart from launching the Alpha smartwatch, nubia also announced couple of other devices at MWC 2019. The nubia Pods are Bluetooth wireless earbuds that are priced at €100, and will be available for purchase from April. The nubia Mini 5G is the company’s Snapdragon 855-powered 5G ready smartphone. The dual display enabled Nnubia X and Red Magic Mars smartphones that were announced in China last year were also showcased at MWC 2019.
