At the ongoing Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said that the company will launch its first 5G smartphone early next year in partnership with UK telecom operator EE. The device will be equipped with the latest Snapdragon 855 processor. The company also confirmed this on its Twitter account.

Since its establishment, OnePlus has used Qualcomm 800-series chips on every device. Pete Lau stated that “OnePlus only makes flagship smartphones, and we believe that the Snapdragon 855 is the best and only choice. We are thrilled by its powerful performance and 5G capabilities. OnePlus will continue to bring its users the best technology and the best user experience possible.”
Apart from the Snapdragon 855, the OnePlus smartphone will also need to include Qualcomm’s X50 LTE Modem for 5G connectivity. Earlier reports indicated that the 5G smartphone offered by OnePlus won’t be the OnePlus 7, the expected successor to the OnePlus 6T, This means that the 5G device could belong to an entirely new lineup.
Europe will be the first market to receive the OnePlus 5G smartphone. The smartphone may debut at MWC in February 2019. EE’s 5G network spans across 16 cities in the UK. The OnePlus 5G phone will be available in US markets through AT&T and Verizon.
With its first 5G smartphone in works, OnePlus aims to get ahead of its competitors, given that major OEMs like Samsung plan to hop on the 5G bandwagon next year.
