OnePlus 8 series rumour roundup: here’s what we know so far

OnePlus is reportedly gearing up to launch the OnePlus 8 series of smartphones in the first half of 2020. Earlier, only two devices – the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro were expected. However, a recent leak revealed the possibility of a Lite version as well. If this comes to pass, it would mark the re-entry of the brand in the affordable smartphone section. The three models have been leaked extensively through 5K renders. While the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are expected t0 feature punch-hole display panels, the OnePlus 8 Lite has also been revealed to house the same. Along with this, the Pro version is speculated to be the brand’s first device with a quad-camera setup.

Display and Design

OnePlus 8 Pro leaked renders reveal dual selfie cameras

Design-wise, the Pro version resembles the OnePlus 7T smartphone. It has been revealed to house a quad-camera setup arranged vertically in the middle of the rear panel. Unlike the OnePlus 7T, the phone is speculated to have a punch-hole display that houses two front cameras. The other two versions are also expected to feature punch-hole display panels. but they’re likely to house single selfie snappers. While the OnePlus 8 is more likely to sport a vertical triple camera set up, OnePlus 8 Lite could come with two cameras on the back arranged inside a rectangular module. The 3.5mm headphone jack is likely t0 be skipped by all the models, while a USB Type-C port would be provided for charging and audio.

The display on OnePlus 8 Pro is expected to be a 6.65-inch OLED panel, while the OnePlus 8 is likely to house a 6.5-inch curved screen. The OnePlus 8 Lite could follow suit with an in-display fingerprint sensor and a selfie snapper placed at the middle inside a punch-hole. OnePlus has already revealed that its future offerings will all offer a 90Hz refresh rate. In October, a popular tipster revealed a 120Hz refresh rate for the OnePlus 8 Pro which would place it in direct competition with the likes of Razer and ASUS’ offerings. However, one should take this information with a pinch of salt as nothing is confirmed yet.

Hardware and OS

Not much is known about the upcoming OnePlus offerings yet, but all three smartphones are likely to be powered by the Snapdragon 865 processor. The OnePlus 8 Pro could offer up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. It will run Android 10 out of the box, as will the other devices in the range. To put things in perspective, the OnePlus 8 Lite will be the company’s second affordable offering after OnePlus X, which was launched in 2015

Another rumoured feature of the upcoming range includes support for 5G networks. The OnePlus 7T didn’t feature 5G connectivity but OnePlus 8 Pro is likely to feature the same.

In terms of optics, the OnePlus 8 Pro has been revealed to house a 64MP or 108MP primary sensor, an ultra-wide-angle lens, a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens. Its quad-camera setup is arranged vertically with three sensors placed inside the module and the fourth lens positioned just alongside the setup. An LED flash is placed below the configuration. As mentioned earlier, the handset is likely to feature two selfie snappers in a capsule-like punch-hole.

The OnePlus 8, on the other hand, will feature a triple rear camera setup arranged vertically with an LED Flash present beneath it. The phone is also expected to feature a punch-hole on the left side of the display to house a single selfie snapper. The OnePlus 8 Lite could have dual cameras arranged in a rectangular shape on the left side of the panel, while its selfie camera will likely be placed at top-centre. The phones would be the first OnePlus offerings to house a punch-hole selfie camera, as OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7T Pro had pop-up front cameras. The resolution of the camera configurations is unknown at this point.

Other features

A leak in October revealed that the OnePlus 8 series could house wireless charging capabilities. However, we have no information regarding this leak’s credibility. If the wireless charging option is introduced, this range would become the first by OnePlus to host such a feature. It is worth noting that the OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro both offered 30W Warp Charging, and the same is expected to feature on the new range.
