When OnePlus first arrived, its calling card was offering premium features at half the price of other flagships, hence the tagline “flagship killer”. However, since the last few launches, OnePlus has crossed over from flagship killer to flagship. There have been talks lately that the phone maker will launch a successor to 2015’s OnePlus X in form of the OnePlus Z (previously rumoured to be the OnePlus 8 Lite).
The OnePlus Z has already been doing rounds of the internet, and we have a fair idea of what the smartphone will bring to the table. However, there was still uncertainty about whether the smartphone was in the works or not. Now, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has seemingly confirmed the existence of an upcoming affordable device.
OnePlus to launch affordable smartphones in India
In an interview with FastCompany, Lau said that the brand is shifting strategies after six years of the smartphone business. OnePlus is planning to explore more products categories in India, apart from launching affordable smartphones. As mentioned before, the last affordable smartphone from the brand was the OnePlus X, launched in 2015.
Lau said, “The ultimate goal is to sell a lot of phones with lower price tags, then spin them into an ecosystem of connected devices.” The CEO also mentioned that the vision of the company will not change, as it will continue to make quality products and there will an announcement regarding the new strategy from OnePlus soon.
According to the report, the new strategy marks OnePlus’ return to its affordable roots. Lau said, “What we’re seeing is that with current products, there’s still a demand from a large consumer base for a more suitable price that enables more consumers to be able to access OnePlus products. That’s a really important insight, and it’s something that we’re taking into very serious consideration.”
OnePlus Z specifications and features
The OnePlus Z is rumoured to feature a 6.4-inch FHD+ AMOLED punch-hole display with a 90Hz refresh rate. There were rumours earlier that the smartphone will be the first from the brand to utilise a MediaTek processor, Dimensity 1000. However, recent leak claims that the phone will feature the Snapdragon 765G SoC. The processor will likely feature up to 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage.
In the optics department, the OnePlus Z is expected to feature a triple camera setup comprising a 48MP primary camera, 16MP ultra-wide lens and 12MP telephoto sensor. Rumours also suggest the phone will house a 4,000mAh battery and support 30W Warp Charging.
