Back in January, OnePlus and OPPO confirmed that it will be merging their respective hardware R&D teams. In July, OnePlus confirmed that it would be merging the codebases of OxygenOS with OPPO’s ColorOS. Today, Lau dubbed OnePlus’ merger with OPPO as the starting point of “OnePlus 2.0” and claimed that the OxygenOS and ColorOS will be merged into a unified OS.

OnePlus and OPPO to launch unified OS in 2022

unified OS

A unified OS that offers the best of OxygenOS and ColorOS is in the works

OnePlus and OPPO are in the process of merging their OxygenOS and ColorOS teams. The unnamed unified OS will be available on global versions of OnePlus and OPPO phones starting next year. Lau said that the new OS will offer a fast, smooth, clean, feature-rich, and stable experience by combing the strengths of OxygenOS and ColorOS. The new OS will adopt the simplicity and smoothness of OxygenOS, and it will inherit the stability of ColorOS, as per the brands.

The unified OS will be free from ads, bloatware, and unnecessary preloaded apps. The OS will offer a lot of customisations and it will offer a somewhat different experience on OnePlus and OPPO devices. Lau did not share any details on the features of the new OS, but he did mention that it will come with an easy-to-use camera interface, which not only consumes less battery power but also delivers better colour calibration by making the most of Hasselblad’s colour science on its flagship devices.

Lau revealed that the full merger of OxygenOS and ColorOS will be completed with the launch of Android 13 in 2022. He added that the integrated OS will be introduced with the launch of its next flagship series next year. Hence, it appears that the OnePlus 10 lineup that is expected to launch in Q1 2022 will offer the first look at the unified OS. Existing OnePlus and OPPO phones that are eligible to receive the Android 13 upgrade will also be treated with the unified OS.

OnePlus 2.0 product strategy

Lau also shared some information on the OnePlus global smartphone portfolio as a part of the OnePlus 2.0 vision. The numbered series flagship will be the most expensive OnePlus phone offering a premium experience. The R series include entry-level flagship phones. The Nord series will cater to the premium mid-range segment and the Nord CE lineup will comprise entry-level mid-range phones. Lastly, the Nord N-series will be the most affordable OnePlus phones from the brand.
