OnePlus 9 (review) and OnePlus 9 Pro (review) have started receiving open beta build of the OxygenOS 12. The company’s latest proprietary software version is based on Android 12. OnePlus announced the news on its official community forum.

OnePlus had earlier announced the integration of its OxygenOS with OPPO’s ColorOS at a codebase level. In a forum post, OxygenOS Product Lead Gary C said in a statement “the new software version will offer a fully upgraded experience on a more stable and power-saving system with a solid backend support while also keeping OxygenOS fast and smooth”.

How to download OxygenOS 12 for OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro

The open beta builds for OxygenOS 12 software is currently available for the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. It can be downloaded by heading to this link and following the instructions. OnePlus warns that this is not a stable version and users might experience issues and bugs. So we wouldn’t recommend installing the Oxygen OS 12 OBT if it’s your daily driver. However, if you still want to proceed with your device, OnePlus adds that the smartphone should have more than 30 percent battery and a minimum of 3GB storage space.

The first OxygenOS 12 open beta build comes with a refreshed UI as well as a host of new features. The company says that the new UI is inspired by James Turrell’s artwork. Let’s take a look at all the new features below.

New Zen Mode design and Work-Life balance 2.0

OnePlus says that the Zen Mode has been redesigned around light and shadow providing a sense of security and mental comforts through visual changes. The feature reduces unnecessary distractions in UI and provides an immersive and comfortable experience. 

Zen Mode and WBL 2.0

The Work-Life Balance 2.0 is based on the philosophy of Zen Mode. It has been available for Indian users and is now expanding globally with OxygenOS 12. In WLB 2.0, users can manage and switch between work and personal accounts with notifications and messages from different apps categorized and sorted by priority. Additionally, users can also switch between the two profiles based on office locations, WiFi networks, and specific times of the day. 

Private Safe and Geometric Deconstruction

OnePlus has introduced a new Private Safe feature with the OxygenOS 12. It stores sensitive data including photos, videos, audios, and documents to a secured part of the phone and is also isolated from other apps while also remaining accessible for the user.

With the OxygenOS 12, OnePlus has also simplified the visuals with geometric-shaped icons, widgets, and straightforward typography making it accessible to a diverse group of users. The brand has also added shadows, subtle gradients for a more premium look. 

OnePlus Shelf and Scout

OnePlus is offering more customisation options for the Shelf feature with the OxygenOS 12. Users can customise the upgraded Shelf with cards of different sizes and background images. The step counter card is now called a Health card that can be connected to the OnePlus Watch and also display vital information like calories and heart rate. There is also an earphone control card inside the Shelf.

The OnePlus Scout that was also an India-exclusive feature is now available for global users. Integrated inside the Shelf, the feature is a one-stop place for searching anything on the device like contacts, documents, music tracks, and more. 

Dark Mode and Note app

The Dark Mode on OxygenOS 12 is getting three adjustable levels of darkness including Gentle, Medium, and Enhanced. The Note app is also updated with new editing and formatting tools as well as a doodle feature. 

Canvas AOD 2.0

OnePlus has optimised the Canvas AOD 2.0 with new brushes and line colours for customisation. Users also get access to a wide selection of photos and adjustments.
