OnePlus is merging its proprietary OxygenOS with OPPO’s ColorOS. The latest development comes weeks after OnePlus announced a merger with OPPO. The brand has integrated a number of teams with OPPO to streamline its operations and capitalise on additional resources. The brand has also announced that its flagships will receive three years of Android updates.

In a blog post, OnePlus said that the integration of OxygenOS and ColorOS will happen at a codebase level. So users are unlikely to notice any significant changes. OnePlus also clarified that the integration won’t affect the operating system of global OnePlus devices i.e. they will continue running on OxygenOS.
OnePlus integrates the codebase of OxygenOS and OPPO’s ColorOS
The integration of two operating systems between OnePlus and OPPO is aimed at leveraging the shared resources available. This will also help OnePlus to deliver faster and more stable OS updates to its users. OnePlus said that future devices will arrive with OS that would be built on a more stable and stronger platform. On the other hand, existing OnePlus phones will receive the update via OTA along with the Android 12 update.
Commenting on the matter, OxygenOS Product Lead, Gary stated “We now have a larger and even more capable team of developers, more advanced R&D resources, and a more streamlined development process all coming together to improve the OxygenOS experience.”
OnePlus announces update cycle for smartphones
Alongside the merger of OxygenOS and ColorOS, OnePlus also announced an improved software maintenance schedule regarding to the lifecycle of its smartphones. Under this, flagship devices including T and R models as well as last year’s OnePlus 8 series and newer phones will receive three major Android updates and four years of security updates. This means that the smartphones should receive updates up to Android 14.
The original OnePlus Nord and the recently launched Nord CE 5G as well as upcoming Nord devices will be eligible for two Android updates and three years of security updates. The Nord N10, N100 and other N-series devices will get one OS update and three years of security updates.
It’s worth noting that flagship models launched before the OnePlus 8 series will get two major Android updates and three years of security updates as per the previously followed timeline.
