OnePlus, the smartphone brand known to pack their phones with astonishing internals is now making quick progress on the software front as well. The latest Open Beta update for the OnePlus 5T has brought in a new way to navigate across the phone’s interface – by using gestures. This, however, is not a new concept as it was introduced in the iPhone X which was the first iPhone to get rid of the home button.
The OnePlus 3 and 3T were launched in 2016 and have already been updated to Android Oreo leaving the 5 and 5T behind. Despite that, the company seems to be hard at work to make the 2017 flagship owners not feel left out. The OnePlus 5T is the first phone from the company to come with a bezel-less display eliminating the home button + fingerprint sensor combination. Making use of this advantage, the latest open beta update has introduced gestures to replace the three software navigation buttons currently found on the phone.
Similar to the iPhone X, swiping up from the bottom will close the app that is in use. To multitask, swiping up and holding briefly will open the app switcher. This is as close as it gets to the $1000 iPhone. All of this for less than half the cost, further adding to the phone’s charm. In addition to that, there is always a fall-back option in case you aren’t a fan of it.
Currently, the phone allows for hiding the software navigation buttons or keeping them pinned on the screen, as per your preference. Since the feature is still in its Beta phase, it may be rough and a bit laggy to start with. Over the next few weeks, the feature is likely to become more refined just in time for it to roll out with Android Oreo.
With this additional feature, the brand is truly looking to stick to the roots of Android and improving upon it, or as they claim in providing an Android+ experience. The face unlock, for example, was earlier incorporated in Android until it was dropped out due to its lack of functionality. With the OnePlus 5T, the company has managed to not only bring it back but also managed to make it work pretty damn well!
OnePlus was very recently subject to controversy regarding this update as well. The brand introduced a clipboard app which was found to be transmitting key user information to Chinese servers. The latest update, however, has eliminated this app altogether. That set aside, the new feature is set to bring major improvements, for starters it will bring Android Oreo to the OnePlus 5T.
To recall, OnePlus has been very cleverly copying Apple in a lot of ways, for example, the design of the OnePlus 5 itself, then came the Face Unlock and now gestures.
