OnePlus is known for selling flagship phones with topnotch specs at affordable pricing. The Shenzhen-based firm also sells some other accessories like earphones, USB-C cables and power banks. Today, the Chinese manufacturer has announced that it is developing the OnePlus TV – a smart television.
The OnePlus smart TV division will be pioneered by OnePlus founder and CEO Pete Lau, and Stephen L will be serving as the TV Product Manager. The announcement of the OnePlus smart TV comes soon before the expected launch of the OnePlus 6T.
OnePlus has not revealed the specifications and features of its forthcoming OnePlus smart TV. The press release suggests that the smart TV from the company will be equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI), the latest hardware and a minimalistic design.
Lau commented on the announcement, saying, “For most of us, there are four major environments we experience each day: the home, the workplace, the commute, and being on-the-move. The home – perhaps the most important environment experience – is just starting to enjoy the benefits of intelligent connectivity. Something that seems as simple as displaying the photos from your mobile phone to a television is still difficult to achieve. With the development of AI technology, our imagination is endless – and we are looking forward to the future.”
Lau recently confirmed to Business Insider that the OnePlus TV will be a premium flagship TV. He has also revealed to the publication that its first TV will be announced sometime in 2019. Lau claims that “It (OnePlus TV) won’t be something that’s perfect and absolutely complete and revolutionary from the start.” The company will be rolling out updates for five years to make the TV smarter.
OnePlus has started a registration page where OnePlus fans can propose names for the forthcoming smart TV from the company. Users can suggest names until October 16th after which the company will select the 10 best entries on October 31st. Each of these will gifted a pair of OnePlus Bullets Wireless that carries a price tag of Rs. 3,990. The person with the winning name will be receiving the first OnePlus smart TV and will be also win a trip to attend its launch event.
There is no confirmation on whether the OnePlus TV will run Android or a different UI. The smart TV from the company is expected to be connected with the smartphone in some way. The Chinese firm has reportedly entered discussions with major streaming media services in the industry.
In the previous week, OnePlus announced that it will be launching its Type C Bullets earphones in the fourth quarter of 2018. The new earphones are expected to launch alongside the OnePlus 6T, which will be the first smartphone from the brand to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack.
