Today at an event held in China, OnePlus has unveiled its 120Hz display technology. The company’s upcoming flagship OnePlus 8 Pro is rumored to come with a 120Hz refresh rate. However, OnePlus hasn’t said anything about the smartphone. In an official statement, CEO Lau said “We believe that the smoothest smartphone display must also be able to deliver a superior visual quality and viewing comfort. We’re sure that OnePlus’s new 120Hz Fluid Display will be the best you’ll lay eyes on in 2020,” Currently, the ROG Phone 2, Razer Phone 2, and Redmi K30 are the only devices in the market with 120Hz refresh rate panel.
OnePlus announced that its 120Hz display technology will come with a MEMC chip for smooth video playback. It will offer QHD+ resolution (that was seen on 2019 flagships) and support 10-bit HDR. The new display technology will come with a new ambient light sensor that will offer a 4096-level of automatic brightness control. It is touted to be four times brighter than any other Android flagship phone. The ambient sensor is also claimed to detect ambient environmental conditions to adjust the brightness levels. The 120Hz Fluid Display technology backed by an RGB colour temperature sensor that has 0.8 Just Noticeable Colour Difference (JNCD) rating. The screen also has a touch sampling rate of 240Hz.
Last year, the 90Hz QHD+ display on OnePlus 7 Pro was claimed to offer the best smartphone display in the industry. With an even higher 120Hz refresh rate on its upcoming phones, OnePlus aims to offer a better user experience. Additionally, the brand claims that its new display technology will bring the ‘best smartphone display in 2020.’
Chances are that only the OnePlus 8 Pro edition will arrive with a 120Hz Fluid Display technology. The standard OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Lite are expected to retain 90Hz screen from the OnePlus 7 series.
