Chinese OEM Oppo has launched a mid-range smartphone dubbed as the A79. The smartphone will sit between the company’s R11s and the F5. The major highlight of this device is its bezel-less display similar to its other siblings. The smartphone also features some decent internals. Let’s have a look at what this Oppo phone has to offer.
Display and Design
The smartphone features a similar metal build design as seen on the R11s with a fingerprint sensor on the back. Also on the back is its single primary camera module and some Oppo branding. Up front is its large 6-inch OLED display rocking a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. Around the display, there exist negligible bezels, however, the chin and forehead could have been thinner.
Performance and Storage
Underneath its hood, the A79 is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P23 SoC clocked at 2.5GHz. To make the phone capable of handling multi-tasking with ease, the company has bundled the phone with 4GB of RAM. In terms of storage, the phone will ship with 64GB internal storage which can be further expanded externally through a microSD card.
Camera and Storage
In the optics department, the phone features a primary rear facing camera and a front-facing selfie camera. The rear camera features a 16-megapixel sensor having an aperture of f/1.6. This is also coupled with an LED flash for capturing images in low light. On the front, the selfie camera comprises of another 16-megapixel camera with a slightly smaller f/2.0 aperture. On the software front, the phone will run Oppo’s custom Color OS 3.2 built over Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The phone is likely to receive an update to Android Oreo in the coming months.
Connectivity and Battery
In the connectivity department, the phone supports all the conventional norms including 2G, 3G, 4G with VoLTE, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth. The A79, similar to other Oppo phones features the company’s proprietary VOOC charging technology which is capable of charging up its 3000mAh battery very swiftly.
Pricing and Availability
The phone has been launched in China for an asking price of CNY 2,399 which translates to roughly about Rs. 23,500. With Oppo launching multiple devices for the Indian market, we can expect the phone to launch in India soon enough.
