The first quarter of 2021 is done and dusted, and it sure was an exciting one for smartphone launches. This is especially true in the case of leading global devices maker OPPO, which has been on a launch spree this year. The company started 2021 with a bang, with the launch of the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G, the first device in India with the Dimensity 1000+flagship chipset. OPPO followed by launching the F19 Pro and F19 Pro+ 5G in March, both of which received a stellar response owing to their advanced videography capabilities.
The brand has now launched the latest entrant in its F-series, the OPPO F19. The phone carries forward several key features from the F19 Pro series, and is priced attractively at Rs 18,990. The device will go on sale via mainline retailers and leading e-commerce platforms starting April 9th.
I’ve had the pleasure of using this device a few days prior to the launch, and have been very impressed by what this affordable handset has to offer. Here’s my personal experience with the device.
Long battery life that gets replenished in a flash
For me, battery life is the most important aspect in a smartphone. There’s nothing that annoys me more than seeing the battery icon go red. Thankfully, I had no such issues with the OPPO F19. The massive 5,000mAh battery kept me going an entire day, and lasted for most of the next day as well. My usage was fairly heavy, comprising editing documents, responding to tons of WhatsApp messages, countless mails, heavy usage of the camera, some social networking and watching videos on YouTube.
OPPO claims the battery can be charged to 100 percent in just 72 minutes. In my battery test, the battery charged from 10 percent to 100 percent in just over an hour, which is in line with OPPO’s numbers, and very impressive for a 5,000mAh unit. With just 5 minutes of charge I could get almost 2 hours of watching my favorite videos on YouTube and could talk on the phone for almost 5.5 hours. Now, that is really great for someone like me who is always in a hurry and has barely 5 minutes to charge my phone during the day.
The OPPO F19 also comes with the AI Night Charge which intelligently charges your phone in intervals so that your phone isn’t continuously charging while you are asleep at night. With AI Night Charge, the charging periods are customised based on your sleeping and charging habits. This decreases the risks associated with charging a battery for a long period of time when frequent power outages that cause unstable voltages are a reality. This also decreases the risk of the battery overheating and being damaged from prolonged charging, which also would then reduce the battery’s life span. This feature reduces the worry of leaving your phone charging all night, and also ensures good battery health.
The battery also comes with some other notable features like Charging Heat Control to prevent overheating, Super Nighttime Standby that consumes just 2 percent battery overnight and a Super Power Saving Mode that kicks in when your battery is low to ensure critical functions are not affected.
Vivid AMOLED display
Most affordable phones these days are equipped with an LCD panel, but the OPPO F19 doesn’t skimp in this regard. The phone features a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen with FHD+ resolution. The tiny 3.688mm punch-hole cutout and 1.60mm bezels result in a high 90.8 percent screen-to-body ratio that makes watching videos and playing games a real pleasure.
I could also enjoy a full screen immersive viewing experience of my favorite shows without any interruption thanks to the punch hole design. Another really quirky feature is a light ring around the front camera punch hole design, which lights up every time I get a call or use the front camera.
The display offers ample 600 nits brightness levels. Therefore, I could easily view the display outdoors, even in the harsh sunlight of summer. The display brightness can also go as low as 2 nits at night, which made it extremely comfortable to browse in the dark.
The display also comes with OPPO’s All-day AI Eye Care technology which is a combination of several features. These include AI Smart Backlight that automatically adjusts the backlight based on your usage, as well as DC dimming that reduces flickering. This ensured minimal eye strain when using the phone for watching videos, gaming or browsing social networks.
The OPPO’s F19 AMOLED panel can output vivid colors and deep blacks, while the high FHD+ resolution results in text that is super sharp. The touch response was also exceedingly smooth, with swipes and taps registering without any lags.
While we’re on the subject of the display, I should mention the in-display fingerprint sensor. The F19 uses OPPO’s In-display Fingerprint 3.0 technology, which is fast and accurate, and was able to recognise my fingerprint and unlock the phone instantly.
You would think that a phone with a 5,000mAh battery would be bulky, but the OPPO F19 impressed me on this front as well. The 3D curved design and thickness of just 7.95mmmakes the phone super sleek and easy to use one-handed. In fact, I was surprised that the phone weighs just 175g, which made holding the device for longer periods quite easy.
OPPO has used die-casting aluminum alloy technology so that the thinnest part of the motherboard covers only 0.21 mm. Further, the material used on both sides of the battery is also quite strong, making the device narrow on the sides. No wonder that OPPO managed to make the F19 lightweight and sleek despite packing in a big battery.
The OPPO F19 is available in Prism Black and Midnight Blue hues. I received the Midnight Blue version, and it’s a stunner, to say the least. The color is transparent while maintaining a gradient, and also sports a reflective sheen. The quality of the material used and the feel of the buttons are all premium, and what you would normally find on a phone that costs much more. I particularly liked the modern rectangular camera module with a dual-tone design and decorative rings around each camera sensor.
OPPO phones are known for their camera prowess, and the OPPO F19 follows suit. It features a 48MP f/1.7 main camera, 2MP depth sensor and 2MP macro camera. At the front, it sports a 16MP selfie camera.
I love testing cameras on any phone, and of course I had to take the OPPO F19 out for a spin during my usage. The phone can capture some really stunning shots in daylight, with good color reproduction, plenty of detail and accurate exposure. Special mention goes out to the depth sensor, which takes stunning portrait shots with professional-looking bokeh effects.
At times when I felt the lighting was not up to the mark, I used the trusty AI Scene Enhancement 2.0, which instantly brightened the images and improved exposure and sharpness. Pro tip – this mode works in both daylight and low-light!

Speaking of low-light, the OPPO F19 features a dedicated Night Mode that makes images brighter and sharper. The three Night Plus filters which I absolutely loved using on the F19 Pro also make their way to the OPPO F19. They are called Astral, Cosmopolitan and Dazzle, and each filter gives a unique touch to the image. Check out the samples below to see how well they work.
While the macro sensor on most phones is disappointing, the OPPO F19’s dedicated macro camera can take detailed close-ups. The images of this flower I clicked not only show the details of every petal but even the pollen! If you’re someone who loves clicking close-up shots, the OPPO F19 won’t disappoint you.
If selfies are your thing, the OPPO F19 has you covered. The camera takes sharp images, both in daylight and low-light. The aforementioned portrait mode works beautifully on the front camera as well. The OPPO F19 uses AI Beautification 2.0 technology to touch up selfie based on ambient lighting, all without making skin tone look artificial. Take a look at the samples below to see it in action.

Last but not the least; the F19’s cameras can record 1080p video at 30fps. While you can capture some great video footage, I especially loved using the slo-mo feature to capture some dramatic clips for Instagram.
Smooth, reliable performance
The OPPO F19 is a reliable performer, with no noticeable lags during my usage. It makes use of the trusty Snapdragon 662 chipset, paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. This combination ensured that there was ample memory for multi-tasking, gaming, watching videos and much more. Plus, I had more than enough storage for all my photo and video files.
Adding to the overall experience is ColorOS 11.1, which is based on the latest Android 11 software. Many phones these days still run Android 10 out of the box, and I appreciated having the latest software version on the OPPO F19.
ColorOS 11.1 brings some really useful features like an Always-on display, dark mode, screen recorder and three finger screenshot. If privacy is important to you, features like Private Safe, App Lock and Doc Vault have you covered. There are also some useful personal safety features on the device, like Low battery SMS which shared my location with a preset contact when the battery dipped below 15 percent, giving me peace of mind when I was out alone. The ColorOS 11.1 also features an All-Scenario SOS, which includes a set of emergency contact features including a hotline to call emergency services, an SOS signal light, the ability to view pre-set emergency details and a beeper which further empowers users with emergency safety features.
At its starting price of Rs 18,990, the OPPO F19 has everything which the modern smartphone user would want in their device, from a stunning AMOLED display to powerful cameras to sleek design. The standout feature for me though was the stellar battery life with fast charging, which is really the icing on the cake. For all these reasons, the OPPO F19 gets a 5-star rating from me.
