Design and Display

The Oppo Find X that measures 156.7 x 74 x 9.6mm features a shiny metallic rear with curved edges. The handset weighs 186 grams. It can be availed in colors such as Bordeaux Red and Glacier Blue.

There is no fingerprint scanner on the phone as it solely relies on 3D facial scanning for unlocking. It is fitted with a bezel-less display and a thin-sized chin. Neither the front camera nor the dual camera setup on the rear are visible since it features a motorized slider for the camera sensors which rises and retracts automatically when the camera app is accessed or closed. When a user swipes up on the screen to unlock the phone, the motorized slider rises for 3D facial recognition. The Find X also lacks a 3.5mm audio jack.

OPPO FInd X Display

3D Facial Recognition

The Chinese manufacturer claims that the motorized slider can slide up in just 0.5 seconds to scan the face of the user in 3D. The company says that sliding mechanism will function without encountering any issue for up to 5 years. The 3D facial scanning feature of the Find X is called O-Face.

According to OPPO, the 3D structured light technology has been never employed on an Android phone before.  It comprises of sensors like flood illuminator, infrared camera, ranging sensor, receiver, dot projector and front camera. O-Face relies on AI to intelligently analyze and identify the user by projecting 15,000 dots on the face of the user. The infrared camera helps in carry out 3D face scanning in the dark.

As far as the accuracy of O-Face is concerned, the Chinese manufacturer claims that it has a failure rate of 1:1,000,000. In comparison, a conventional fingerprint scanner has a failure rate of 1:50,000. Hence, the reliable O-Face can be also used for authenticating transactions through AliPay.
