OPPO INNO DAY 2020: introducing path-breaking innovations with a human touch

OPPO, the leading global smart devices brand, has been at the forefront of path-breaking technological innovations in the consumer electronics space. While these developments might seem futuristic, OPPO’s innovations have always been focused on the human touch – essentially creating technology that helps the end-user on a daily basis.

#OPPOINNODAY20 has showcased OPPO’s legacy to demonstrate new technology and introduce futuristic products with a humane touch.

For this year, the theme of #OPPOINNODAY20 was “Leap into the Future”, where OPPO showcased technologies like augmented reality, and smartphones with rollable displays. These innovationsare not only revolutionary, but will also change the way we interact with technology on an ongoing basis. Here’s a recap of the future technology that was showcased at INNO DAY 2020.

INNO DAY 2020: a giant leap into the future

OPPO’s INNO DAY 2020 reiterated the company’s technology vision for the future and further consolidated the brand’s position as a virtuous innovator. The brand detailed its new go-to market strategy called “3 + N + X”, with hardware, software and services forming the three underlying technologies on which the company will build new products. This new technology development strategy of OPPO reaffirms the brand’s intent to develop products that are meaningful to people who use them, and add value by ensuring they have a positive impact on society.

These technologies will be served by essential capabilities (denoted by “N”) like interconnectivity, AI, Multimedia, Security and Privacy and Multimedia. “X” stands for differentiated technologies that help OPPO stand out in the crowd, including Flash Charge technology, imaging technology, augmented reality and new form factors.

This new development strategy will definitely further strengthen OPPO’s position in the smart device industry. The three unique concepts that OPPO showcased during the event – the OPPO X 2021 rollable concept smartphone with a rollable OLED display, the AR Glass 2021 and CybeReal AR app amongst a host of other innovative technologies are a testimony to how the new development strategy will revolutionise the entire industry.

OPPO also introduced its Full-path Colour Management System that will be adopted in the OPPO Find X3 flagship series in 2021. The Find X3 series will take the legacy of the Find series forward and will provide an enhanced viewing experience by delivering more accurate colour reproduction. With the technology supporting a wide variety of multimedia files, it will provide users with more creative freedom for better imaging and visualisation capabilities. This takes the Find series a step further which has already set the benchmark very high for innovative, uber premium smartphones.

OPPO announces revolutionary concept rollable phone

The most notable and eye catching product that was displayed was the OPPO X 2021 Rollable concept smartphone. Although it is not certain when the product will be available commercially, it did create a lot of ripples amongst tech enthusiasts and OPPO fanatics likewise.

Mobile phone form factors have always been a domain where smartphone makers have endeavoured to deliver the latest innovation. This has largely been done in the form of foldable smartphones. However foldable smartphones have seen issues with display consistency and durability.

With the rollable OLED display on the OPPO X 2021, the screen not only looks and flows seamlessly but also provides varying screen dimensions adjusted as per user requirement. The OPPO X 2021 measures 6.7-inches display in smartphone mode, and can be expanded to 7.4-inches to offer a tablet-like user experience. This also eliminates the need for the user to purchase a tablet separately.

As per the prototype displayed by OPPO, a user can simply slide their finger on the edge of the phone to roll the display in and out, with the text and images on the screen seamlessly adapting to the changing screen size. This motion can also be done one-handed, unlike foldable phones which need both hands to open and close. And unlike foldable phones where the crease gets in the way of user experience, a rollable display simply stretches, eliminating any distortion in the panel.

This not only makes the smartphone more futuristic, but also paves the way for a new form of smartphone display interaction, especially while watching videos and gaming.

In order to make this concept phone possible, OPPO developed three proprietary technologies. The Roll Motor powertrain forms the brain of this new design, while the 2-in-1 forms the body, offering strength and rigidity. OPPO also developed the Warp Track high-strength screen laminate to eliminate the crease and make effective use of the flexible display. This helped OPPO realise that the form of rollable display would be more suited to consumers than foldable smartphones offered by other smartphone makers in the market.

The future is AR

OPPO has been investing in AR R&D since 2014, and announced that it would invest RMB 50 million over the next three years to focus on developing the hardware, software and service ends of AR. The new OPPO AR Glass 2021 and the OPPO CybeReal AR app are testament to that.

The OPPO AR Glass 2021 is the second AR glasses concept product that OPPO unveiled at INNO DAY. With considerable improvements over the previous generation AR Glass showcased last year, the new AR Glass 2021 is lighter and more comfortable thus more convenient to carry and use for prolonged period. It clearly also provides users a more immersive and wholistic AR experience with smartphone integration and spatial sensors. The glasses need to be connected to a smartphone via a Type-C cable, in this case, the OPPO Find X2 Pro. This allows the glasses to take full advantage of the flagship Snapdragon 865 chipset, with a 40 percent and 50 percent improvement in CPU and GPU performance respectively, thereby enhancing the overall performance.

The OPPO’s AR Glass 2021 provides a whole new dimension to visual experience with its 0.71-inch OLED panels and inbuilt speaker. This allows for a home theatre like experience that’s similar to viewing a 90-inch display from just 3 feet away, providing users a futuristic visual experience unlike any offered till date.There are endless possibilities when it comes to AR glasses for end consumers, but the more popular ones will be the ability to stream videos and play AR multi-player games. OPPO’s glasses will allow for a far more immersive experience than watching content on your smartphone or even television, all through a device that fits right into your pocket.

OPPO is not restricting its AR work to hardware alone, and is building AR-based software as well. For the AR platform, it showcased a revolutionary real-time application called CybeReal AR app.

As the world gets more digital and the future of human interactions gets driven through AR, the CybeReal AR app effectively will help to reconstruct our world and provide a new perception of the real world using high-precision localization and scene recognition. The CybeReal AR app will enable users in the future to experience precise position mapping much more than the current navigation systems can do. It will even be able to accurately pinpoint the user’s location indoors. This enables users to find their location anywhere through the CybeReal AR app by simply opening the camera, and seeing information about their surroundings.

Apart from navigation, users will also be able to find information about stores, landmarks, local attractions and much more. So whether you are in a mall, your neighbourhood or out on the highway, this high precision technology will enable an enhanced, informative navigation experience. The CybeReal AR app is only a glimpse by OPPO on how AR will shape our future interactions not only with technology but also on a personal level.

OPPO’s AR technology on display at the INNO DAY will not only enhance a users’s natural interactions via smartphones, but also enable a whole new dimension with gesture-based interactions, thus providing a real-time feel to the user within the augmented reality space.

The legacy of OPPO INNO DAY

OPPO started INNO DAY in 2019 as its flagship event last year to showcase breakthrough technology being designed and developed by the company, with the theme “Internet of Experience”. At the event, OPPO showed how the internet experience will evolve in the coming years with 5G. In other words, the event was an opportunity to experience future technology even before it came to market.

With INNO DAY 2020, OPPO has taken the legacy of the event a step further, and showed the world the technology direction OPPO is thinking about and has made it one of the most anticipated technology events of the year. The marquee annual event is not only looked out for by consumers and tech enthusiasts, but also closely followed by industry stalwarts for the path breaking technology direction that OPPO provides. Many of the technologies on display are yet to be commercially available, but #OPPOINNODAY20 clearly outlines OPPO as a change maker and a leader in creating technologies for improving human interactions.

OPPO: a leader of human innovation

Concept devices and futuristic technology usually have no place in the real world, and in many cases, rarely make it to market. This is not the case with OPPO’s INNO DAY showcases though. At INNO DAY 2019, the company announced its first smartwatch that was launched as the OPPO Watch in 2020. The 30W fast wireless charging announced at the event was not only launched commercially, but also surpassed by OPPO itself this year.

Similarly, while OPPO’s rollable smartphone and AR glasses might not make it to market in their current iterations; we can expect the underlying technology to find its way to OPPO products in the near future. With two successful years of INNO DAY under its belt, we can’t wait to see what OPPO comes up with in 2021 to revolutionize and personalise the technology experience even further.
