Chinese smartphone maker OPPO has unveiled the second generation of the Reno series smartphones in India today. To recall, the first generation Reno series was launched in May this year and was offered in standard and 10x Zoom editions. The Reno2 series has been launched in three variants namely the Reno2, Reno2Z, and Reno2F. The Reno2 is the top-end variant in the lineup, while the 2Z and 2F share a few specs. Let’s delve into the detailed specifications and features of the smartphones below:
Display & Design:
In terms of display, the Reno2 features a 6.55-inch screen while the 2Z and 2F have slightly smaller 6.53-inch screens. All three devices feature an AMOLED panel on the top. For protection against accidental damages and scratches, the display and back panel on Reno2 is shielded by a Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and 5 respectively. The Reno 2Z and 2F are fitted with Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and back. The top-end variant also comes with E3 sunlight screen technology that offers sufficient brightness in the outdoor environment. The Reno2 series is equipped with an in-display fingerprint scanner featuring the latest G3 optical sensor technology.
Design-wise, the OPPO Reno2 retains the shark-fin rising camera from the first generation Reno series. The phone’s inbuilt sensors help retract the camera module automatically when the phone is dropped. On the other hand, the Reno2Z and 2F sport a vertical elevating front camera mechanism located at the top center of the phone. The lights on both sides of the pop-up module will flash with an adjustable light colour while using facial recognition unlock.
On the back panel, the Reno2 series houses a vertically stacked quad-camera setup at the center, just like the first generation Reno. OPPO claims that the rear cameras remain hidden under the back cover which is constructed from Corning Gorilla glass. The back panel also flaunts a gradient design which is said to show different colour shades from different angles. The Reno2 can be availed in Ocean Blue and Luminous Black colours, while the Reno2Z ships in Luminous Black, Sky White, and Polar Light colour options. The Reno2Z is offered in Sky White and Lake Green colours.
In the camera department, the Reno2 Series is equipped with a quad-camera setup. All three smartphones come with a 48MP primary camera featuring a Sony IMX586 sensor. Alongside it, the camera module on the standard version comprises of a 13MP telephoto lens, an 8MP ultra-wide angle sensor, and a 2MP mono lens. The setup on the Reno2Z and 2F consists of an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, 2MP mono lens and 2MP portrait sensor. On the front, the Oppo Reno2 Series is fitted with a 16MP snapper for selfies and other purposes.
The standard Reno2 features 5x hybrid zoom by using combination of the wide-angle lens, primary camera, and telephoto lens. It is capable of covering respective equivalent focal lengths of 16mm, 26mm and 83mm. The smartphone also offers 20x digital zoom for shooting long-distance subjects. The Reno2 comes with Ultra Dark mode and Ultra Macro shot. The former simplifies shooting in low light conditions with the help of NPU and dedicated AI that brightens the picture without producing noise. The wide-angle sensor also functions as a macro lens and lets the users shoot detailed close-up shots.
Other common camera features on the Reno2 Series include AI beauty mode, HDR portrait and portrait mode. The Ultra Night mode on the Reno2F eliminates ghosting from images, while the Ambient Light feature enables users to pose with friends based on the lighting effect. The Ren2Z also comes with Ultra Night mode and Ambient Light feature.
In terms of video, the Reno2 and 2Z feature an Ultra Steady mode for shooting smooth handheld videos. The electronic image stabilisation (on Reno2Z) and optical image stabilisation eliminate shaky shots with a 60fps frame rate. The Reno2 offers a 116-degree ultra-wide-angle video shooting while the 2Z and 2F offer 119-degree field-of-view. The Reno2 and 2Z also come with a Bokeh effect video that adds background blurring effect before filming a video. The standard Reno2 also features Background Noise Reduction and Audio Zoom to make human voices clear and amplify the sound while recording videos.
Hardware, OS, and Battery:
The Oppo Reno2 is powered by a Snapdragon 730G processor. The Reno2Z and 2F are equipped with MediaTek P90 and P70 chipsets respectively. The processors on all three Reno2 smartphones are paired with 8GB LPDDR4x RAM. The Reno2 and 2Z offer 256GB onboard storage while the 2F packs 128GB in form of UFS 2.1. Software-wise, the Reno2 Series runs on ColorOS 6.1 based on Android Pie. All three smartphones are backed by a 4,000mAh battery unit with support for VOOC 3.0 fast charging technology. On the connectivity front, the Reno2 Series offers a Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, and 4G VoLTE.
