Videolicious: here’s why the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G should be your next buy

The Reno5 Pro 5G is the latest entry in OPPO’s premium Reno series of smartphones that goes on sale starting January 22nd. Given that video content creation and consumption is on the rise and we see this trend picking up in 2021, the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G has a very important role to play.

Priced at INR 35,990 and available with mainline retailers and Flipkart, let’s quickly rehash the specs – the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G comes with the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ chipset (in India for the first time), with a combination of 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage capacity, 64MP quad rear cameras with the industry-first AI Highlight Video mode, a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED 3D Borderless Sense screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, and a 4350mAh battery supported by 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging – making it a smartphone that seemingly has it all.

Does it, however, cut it in terms of the real -world performance? We answer all the questions that you would want to know before buying the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G.

What is the experience with videography?

The real winner in terms of the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G’s imaging capabilities lies in its video performance. And this is thanks to the industry-first AI Highlight Video, which uses AI to detect the lighting conditions and automatically apply the required algorithm. This feature is powered by the Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video system which integrates powerful hardware, versatile software and smart algorithms to improve video quality and portrait effects.

In simple terms, the AI Highlight Video feature helped us adjust background light automatically, without needing us to toggle with any manual settings. This works well both in low-light as well as in daylight scenarios where there was harsh background light from the sun. With this mode enabled, we were able to get better exposure in videos, and the best part is that we saw the results in real time through view finder. Additionally, this feature is available on both the front and rear cameras, so we could create both self shot portrait videos and rear camera shot videos through this feature. During the day shooting scenario, the Live HDR mode was activated and during low lighting conditions, the Ultra Night Mode was activated. As you can see from the video samples, the colours are captured more accurately with optimal brightness and clarity in every frame.

What really caught our attention was how easy it was for us to take these videos. All we had to do was activate the AI once the video mode was on to get good looking results.

The Dual-view video is another fun video format, which enables you to use the front and rear cameras simultaneously. There are options for split, round and rectangle split-screen formats, and you can even drag around the latter two to suit your composition.

We really enjoyed using this mode, which is perfectly suited to vlogging, especially when in a scenic location. Take a look at the samples to see how seamlessly it works. The mode gives the impression that we edited the video, and most would think it impossible that we shot it with a single click of a button.

Another mode we loved was the AI Portrait Video. The mode does exactly what it says, keeping the subject in sharp focus while blurring the background completely. The AI wizardry ensured that the blurred effect remains even when the subject is moving, resulting in some spectacular footage. We particularly liked that this mode as it can be activated from both the front and rear cameras.

No smartphone camera is complete without slo-mo, and the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G’s rear camera supports 960fps slow motion. We shot twirls and hair flips with this mode, and got some dramatic, Instagram-worthy footage.

The monochrome video mode also deserves special mention. You can either choose to keep it classic with black and white footage, or play it up by highlighting only the reds, blues and greens in the video.

And last but not least, the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is equipped with Ultra Steady Video 3.0, which eliminates motion blur and shakes while shooting a moving subject.

How good are its imaging capabilities?

The imaging experience on the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is another great aspect of the device. Not only does it have a 64MP quad rear camera setup, but also a very competent 32MP front camera. Most importantly, its performance in the real worldshows a clear jump in terms of visible difference in videos and image shooting vis-a vis other competing devices.

The pixel-binned daytime shots we took turned out stunning, with rich, punchy colours and excellent dynamic range. The camera does a great job of balancing different elements like the sky, trees and subjects with accurate exposure. The phone’s Image Clear Engine (ICE) tech ensures that moving subjects like kids or pets are captured clearly without any motion blur.

We also tried the Extra HD mode, which did a fantastic job of increasing clarity in daylight shots. The mode can be accessed by going to Camera > More > Extra HD, and enables you to take Ultra Clear 108MP photos. Thanks to the higher resolution, we were able to get crisp images that retained their sharpness even while zoomed in.

Ultra Clear 108MP

The macro shots were among the best we’ve seen in this segment. With other phones, we usually notice compromised detail in macro shots, but the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G didn’t have this problem. The camera also managed to get very close to the subject, letting us view minute details in subjects like flowers.

If you want photos with additional flair, you can try the AI Color Portrait, which keeps the subject in colour, while turning the background black and white. With this mode, you can also choose to keep red, blue or green elements in colour in the background, with the rest remaining monochrome. Suffice to say, these resulted in some striking shots. The best part is that this mode can also be used for capturing videos.

AI Color Portrait Rear Camera

AI Color Portrait Front Camera

If selfies are your thing, you won’t be disappointed. The OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G’s 32MP front camera captures plenty of detail, with skin tones appearing natural and colours retaining their depth. Even the background in selfies is captured beautifully, and that’s something you don’t see on many front cameras. If you like selfie portraits, the front camera does an excellent job of edge detection, with no visible blurring even around stray hair strands.

The excellent AI algorithms ensure that low light photography gets a major boost with the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G. The AI scene optimisation algorithms had a clear impact in the footage we recorded, and at times, the camera instinctively enabled the right settings by gauging the kind of environment we were around.

Ultra Dark Mode: On and Off

For night shots,  this smartphone camera automatically activates the Ultra Dark Mode, which has the ability to improve any low light situation, without compromising on image noise and overall colour tone. From the rear camera, we were able to get visibly clear images even from a moving car at night.

We also tried the night mode in the front camera, and the results were immediately noticeable. With this mode, dark back grounds spring to life while the overall image is sharpened for great low-light selfies.

Special mention goes to the Night Flare portrait mode, which is an OPPO exclusive feature. It works like portrait mode, but blurs the background lights into a pretty bokeh effect that looks like something straight out of a DSLR. Just take a look at the samples below to see what difference this mode makes!

How is its design and build quality?

Right from the onset, what impressed us the most was how gorgeous and premium the smartphone felt in hand. The OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G offers the 3D borderless sense screen that features a 92.1 percent screen to body ratio ensuring a pure, smooth and flowing display. The 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display offers rich colours. The scrolling and swiping on the display were also buttery smooth thanks to the 90Hz refresh rate.

While out and about with the device, we attracted quite a few raised eyebrows and questions in terms of which phone wewere using, purely based on its looks.Everyone around us said that the phone shimmered from afar, and that is purely because of the Reno Glow process on the Astral Blue Variant that adds to the lucrative shimmer on the smartphone’s back panel. The phone is available in Starry Black colour as well, and after a week of heavy usage, we can vouch for its scratch and fingerprint resistance. It looks exactly the way it did the day we received the device.

Overall, the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is built superbly. It feels light and sleek to hold in hand, and has a very ergonomic design. It also looks and feels very premium, and overall, delivers a true flagship design and display experience.

The display also enhances the overall smartphone experience because it makes it pleasant to look at all the videos and photos we shot through the day.

What’s the battery life like, and how long does it take to charge completely?

The 4,350mAh battery makes sure that no matter where you go, the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G will last you comfortably for a full work day no matter how much you stress it. On general usage of GPS navigation, hours of music and video streaming, and even more hours of phone calls, messaging and social media browsing, we found the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G battery to be good enough to last well beyond one full work day. On a day when we were stuck in traffic on the way back home, we could stream a live match and not have the battery die on our way back.

The best part? Once back home, it took a just about 30 minutes to charge the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G to a 100 percent, all thanks to the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 Flash Charge tech. By the time we were ready to unwind, the phone was back in action, too.

Why should you buy the Reno5 Pro 5G?

Considering all this, we believe that the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G has everything it takes to stand out in today’s highly competitive world of phones. From exemplary video performance to long-lasting battery, this phone has it all. The real prowess of the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G however lies in its cameras, which are among the best in class.

This is especially true for videos – from features like AI Highlight Video to Dual-View Video to AI Color Portrait, the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is a true videography expert. Therefore, if you’re looking for a camera phone that makes you the next video pro without compromising on other aspects, the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G gets a 5-star rating from us and should definitely be your next buy.
