[Update]: Ahead of INNO Day 2021, OPPO has officially confirmed that it will debut its first smart glasses at the event. At INNO Day last year, OPPO had introduced AR Glass 2021 and the smart glasses confirmed to debut next week is likely to be a successor. OPPO is also planning to enter the NPU segment with its dedicated neural processing unit. It is not clear whether OPPO’s NPU will become part of this smartphone but it could be part of its smart devices.

At last year’s OPPO INNO Day, the brand showcased a rollable concept smartphone. This year, the brand will focus on a retractable rear-camera sensor. The company is calling the technology as ‘OPPO Retractable Camera’. OPPO has also shared a short teaser video on its Twitter account giving us a glimpse at the feature.

OPPO teases a retractable rear camera module

OPPO hasn’t revealed the name of the device with the retractable camera technology. The Chinese smartphone maker will be the first to introduce such a device. The Twitter teaser video reveals a rectangular camera module housing two small sensors and one large sensor below it along with an LED flash unit. If you take a closer look at the teaser, the latter is a 1/1.56-inch primary sensor with an f/2.4 aperture.

The main camera sensor is seen retracting when the camera app is opened on the smartphone. It’s likely that the technology will also operate when the user activates a particular shooting mode. One can notice the pixels coming from the sensor when it is being raised. This could be to capture more details, bokeh effect, or a zoom feature. If it works similar to a zoom lens seen on a DSLR then it would be a big achievement for the smartphone maker.

Additionally, OPPO also revealed the upcoming offering’s durability. The sensor is shown working when water is being splashed. It is also seen retracting when the device is in freefall just like pop-up camera modules.

We will know more details about the OPPO Retractable Camera next week at the brand’s INNO Day.
