Porsche Taycan Turbo S outpaces Tesla Model S with new fastest lap time at Nürburgring

Highlights

  • The automaker said it used the Porsche Performance Package to achieve the feat
  • But the company said it didn’t make any changes to the weight from the production model
  • Porsche’s super-luxury EV is available in India for over Rs 2 crore

German automaker and Volkswagen subsidiary Porsche has reached a new milestone, as its Taycan Turbo S EV has beaten the best lap time previously set by the Tesla Model S Plaid at Germany’s Nürburgring race track. Porsche’s EV beat the previous best lap time of 7 minutes and 35.579 seconds originally set in September last year by the Model S Plaid, with the Taycan Turbo S achieving the feat in only 7:33:350, an improvement of over two seconds. The track covers a distance of 20.832 kilometres.

Porsche clarified that the Taycan Turbo S used to beat the Nürburgring lap time was outfitted with the automaker’s Performance Package and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC). The former is available exclusively in Germany and is sold via Porsche Tequipment.

Furthermore, Porsche’s EV also included Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres supported by 21-inch alloys, in addition to a roll cage and racing seats. No weight changes were made, the automaker said, claiming that it was consistent with production models of the Taycan Turbo S.

Motorsports driver Lars Kern was driving the automobile when the new best lap time was set at Nürburgring. “In the past, only thoroughbred super sports cars got into the 7:33 range. With the new performance kit, I was able to push even harder, and the car was even more precise and agile to boot,” Kern said.

“This lap time not only shows how much potential lies in our new performance kit, but also confirms once again the sports car genes of the Taycan,” VP of Product Line Taycan, Kevin Giek said.

The ultra-luxurious Taycan Turbo S sells in India for an ex-showroom price of Rs 2.34 crore. Powered by dual electric motors, the EV can go from 0 to 100 kmph in just 2.8 seconds, assisted by Porsche Launch Control, with the ability to generate max power of up to 761 PS. While it’s not the most affordable electric car in India right now, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S is certainly the fastest.
