Qualcomm Snapdragon launch event: Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 expected

Qualcomm has confirmed that it will hold a Snapdragon Night event at 8 PM (local time) on May 20th, 2022, in China. The event is expected to see the arrival of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chipset, which is said to be an enhanced and overclocked version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, which was announced in December 2021.

Rumours have claimed that the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset designed to fuel sub-flagship smartphones may also go official alongside the SD8G1+. As the name goes, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is expected to succeed the Snapdragon 778G SoC from last year. The first phones featuring the new Snapdragon chipsets are expected to launch in the next few weeks in China.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus will be a 4nm chipset, which is likely to be manufactured by Taiwan-based TSMC. To recall, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 uses Samsung’s 4nm process. It is rumoured to include 1 x Cortex X2 prime core, 3 x Cortex A710 performance cores, 4 x Cortex A510 efficiency cores, and Adreno 730 GPU. It is expected to offer maximum clocking speeds of 2.99GHz.

Motorola’s “Frontier” flagship, which is expected to launch next month in China could be the first phone to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ SoC. This phone is likely to arrive with the “Motorola Edge 30 Ultra” moniker in markets outside China. Some of the other devices that are expected to feature the SD8G1+ include Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, OnePlus 10 Ultra, ASUS ROG Phone 6, Xiaomi 12T Pro, and the upcoming Motorola Razr clamshell.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 specifications (Rumoured)

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 will also be a 4nm chipset. It will comprise 4 x Cortex A710 cores working at 2.36GHz, 4 x Cortex A510 cores clocking at 1.80GHz, and Adreno 662 GPU. OPPO will be announcing the Reno 8 series on May 23rd, 2022, in China. Rumours are rife that the Reno 8 Pro could be equipped with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset. Xiaomi, Huawei, and Honor are some of the brands that are rumoured to launch SD7G1 phones in China in the coming months.
