At the event, the company will finally reveal the successor to Snapdragon 865 mobile platform. However, there is now a new twist to this story. While it was rumoured that the next chip from Qualcomm will be called Snapdragon 875, a cryptic tweet from Realme indicates it might debut as Snapdragon 888 instead.

Realme teases new flagship smartphone

This should not come as a surprise since tech companies are changing naming convention with huge leaps in performance or design change. Samsung jumped from Galaxy S10 to Galaxy S20 while Apple skipped the iPhone 9 lineup altogether. There is a possibility that Qualcomm is also skipping Snapdragon 875 and moving to Snapdragon 888 instead.

Xu Qi Chase, Chief Marketing Officer at Realme and Madhav Sheth, CEO of Realme India both posted a cryptic message on their social media handles today. The message simply reads “Qualcomm 8_ _”. Soon, a number of people started posting details that the chipset is called Snapdragon 888 in reply to Sheth and Chase on Twitter and Weibo respectively.

Twitter tipster Ishan Agarwal also shared an image that claims to acknowledge Snapdragon 888 branding for the next flagship processor from Qualcomm. We will know whether the next flagship mobile chipset is called Snapdragon 875 or Snapdragon 888 or something else in less than one hour.

At the virtual event, Qualcomm executives are said to be joined by key people from Sony, Xiaomi, OnePlus and other tech companies. This could be to announce new products developed using Qualcomm’s latest chipset. We are already expecting Samsung to be the first smartphone maker to launch the first smartphone powered by Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset in the US next month.

Meanwhile, Realme is rumoured to be working on a flagship smartphone called the Ace series. This teaser could be for the next Ace smartphone or might also become part of the next device in the X series. Regardless of the name, Realme would want to capitalize on the hype and introduce new device sooner than later.
