Redmi India has been teasing a phone termed as the ‘Desh ka Smartphone’ and it has finally been launched today. The new phone is the ‘Redmi 5A’, an upgrade to the popular Redmi 4A launched earlier this year. Specifications of the phone are almost identical to its previous version. The phone was earlier launched in China last month. Price of the lowest variant starts from Rs. 5,999, but there’s an amazing discount offered by Xiaomi, more on that later in the article.
The Redmi 5A packs in a 5-inch HD display which bears a resolution of 1080 x 720 pixels, this brings the pixel density of the phone to 296PPI. Design of the smartphone is almost similar to the Redmi 4A. It is available in three different colours: Dark Grey, Gold and Rose Gold.
For the shutterbugs, there’s a 13-megapixel camera on the rear with PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus) and LED flash. It has an f/2.2 aperture for low-light photography and comes with a 5-element lens. Xiaomi also claims that the rear camera offers low-light enhancements for pictures clicked during night or indoor conditions. On the front, there’s a 5-megapixel selfie camera which should be able to click decent pictures and aid in video calling.
On the performance front, the ‘Desh ka Smartphone’ is packed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset clocked at 1.4GHz. There are two variants of the phone, one comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage whereas the other one fits 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Just like the Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite launched a few weeks ago, this one also comes with a dedicated microSD card slot. So now you can use two SIM cards and a microSD card up to 128GB simultaneously. This has been a change made specially for Indian consumers as the China variant of the same phone was launched with a hybrid slot.
The Redmi 5A runs on MIUI 9 built on top of Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. This shall allow you to use the host of features offered in the new custom UI by Xiaomi. The smartphone comes with a 3000mAh battery unit which Xiaomi claims provides up to 8 days of standby time. The 5V/1A charger bundled with the 5A should allow you to charge your phone faster than other low end Xiaomi smartphones.
The Redmi 5A is priced at Rs. 5,999 for the 2GB/16GB variant and Rs. 6,999 for the 3GB/32GB model. The smartphone goes on sale starting December 7th, 12PM. You can get one for yourself through Flipkart, Mi.com or via a Mi Home store. It will also be made available across Xiaomi’s offline retail partners soon after its online launch.
Xiaomi India has decided to take the biggest step in the history of smartphone industry by giving back INR 500 crores to our community. As a gift to our Mi Fans, Redmi 5A (2GB+16GB) will be priced at INR 4,999 for the first five million units #DeshKaSmartphone pic.twitter.com/Zn04lu3ZQ2

But here’s the surprise by Xiaomi, the first 50 lakh units of the Redmi 5A (2GB + 16GB variant) will be available for just Rs. 4,999. The brand says that it is giving back to the Mi community through this discounted price. This is a great initiative by Xiaomi as the phone has got superb specifications if we consider the effective price after the discount. The competitive pricing will further increase Xiaomi’s dominance in this budget segment. All the units of the Redmi 5A will be ‘Made in India’.
Redmi 4A was a widely successful smartphone at Rs. 5,999, and now its upgrade is available at a price even lower than that. Are you looking forward to buy the Redmi 5A? Do you have any questions about the phone? Let us know in the comments section below.
